As the first music product in 2024 and also the first member of BLACKPINK to launch a solo project, ROCKSTAR quickly attracted the attention of fans around the globe.
However, after the MV aired, Lisa's comeback product received a lot of controversy mixed with disappointment.
Accused of "appropriating culture" by international fans
Before officially launching ROCKSTAR, Lisa "teased" the MV with two super hot concept photos. The Thai female idol surprised fans with her woftcut hair, bold shape, personality and brown skin.
The dyeing of brown skin has "touched" a sensitive part of the audience. Lisa was "named" by international fans as deliberately blackfishing. (Reporter: It is the act of modifying physical features to look like people of color, such as skin coloring, makeup, hairdressing, and even plastic surgery. This action usually takes place in women, and for aesthetic or commercial purposes).
The act of "blackening" oneself to look like a person of color, with the aim of promoting a music product angered a part of international fans. As an Asian idol, this makes Lisa accused of appropriating black culture. A series of posts criticized Lisa for "denying her Asian idol roots" and "not wanting to be herself". This noise caused a lot of market damage for Lisa right before her comeback.
Writing meaningless, clichéd lyrics
When the ROCKSTAR MV aired, Lisa disappointed a large number of music fans because the quality of the song content was too poor. ROCKSTAR was introduced as the first song that a female idol participated in writing lyrics. With a capacity of more than 2 minutes, Lisa's song repeats the boring phrase "Baby, I'm Rockstar".
Writing music seems to still be a challenge for female idols when during her time at YG, her products were completely made by a skilled team. Lisa has not promoted her artist story. ROCKSTAR lyrics are criticized for being pointless, clichéd, and too corny in wanting to "flex" themselves. Everything that remains after the song is just pomp and glamour but... slip.
Besides, the rap line "Lisa, can you teach me Japanese?" (translation: Lisa, can you teach me Japanese?") also caused fierce controversy. Set in the context of the song, this rap verse is really irrelevant. Many Lisa fans interpreted the rap verse as a reference to the West's distorted perception of Asians, claiming that they are all from Japan or China.
However, this explanation did not really convince the Japanese. Everyone found it difficult to understand because Lisa had so little contact with the land of the rising sun.
Lisa's immature songwriting skills make Lisa's intentions not clearly shown through the lyrics, thus disappointing people even more about the female idol. Cultural messages are included in the song in a clumsy and superficial way. This makes rappers underestimate Lisa.
A leading music website in the UK NME has an objective review and evaluation of Lisa's comeback music product. NME said that Lisa's ROCKSTAR is an exaggerated product, "flex" about herself is not too different from the solo debut song released 3 years ago - LALISA.
"Put" music plagiarism - MV, stealing design
In addition to the controversy over the lyrics, the content of the song, ROCKSTAR's electronic mix pop mix also raises the question of plagiarism. On Kpop forums, people pointed out that the electronic materials and percussion used by Lisa's team for ROCKSTAR are somewhat similar to aespa's hit - Supernova. However, because this material is quite popular, accusing Lisa of plagiarizing aespa music is not convincing.
For comparison, ROCKSTAR's main material is closer to Charli XCX's BRAT album. Thanks to the implementation of the content of "one heaven and one area", few people pay attention to this. In addition, the scene where Lisa and 100 dancers are also "peeled" the same ideas, angles and movements as the FE MV! N by Travis Scott. This further raises the question that Lisa has a certain reference to famous European and American artists for this comeback.
The misfortune did not stop, Lisa and her crew continued to be accused of stealing the design. Specifically, a Chinese designer named Jewel Y posted a series of articles accusing Lisa and the LLOUD team of plagiarizing 1 of her design that was published in 2020.
Without thanks to BLINK, BLACKPINK fans are disappointed
The latest noise Lisa was involved in was the incident of "not thanking BLINK in the IG post". Specifically, on June 30, Lisa posted a letter expressing her gratitude to fans after launching the ROCKSTAR MV. In this status line, Lisa thanked the RCA Records team, LLOUD company, and Lilies (the female idol's own fan community). Immediately, the post received a series of mixed opinions, most of which were negative comments.
The fact that Lisa only mentions her own fan - Lilies has hurt a part of BLINK (BLACKPINK fandom).
Lisa's post also sparked speculation about BLACKPINK's future. Many people think that Lisa is no longer interested in the group.
