Without a doubt, Lisa's Rockstar is the most popular music product in the world. Lisa's return under her own company LLOUD received a lot of praise from the audience.
But recently, the world online community was stirred by the suspicion of Lisa plagiarizing in the Rockstar MV.
Accordingly, a Chinese designer accused the Blackpink member's team of plagiarism.
Specifically, Yang Yue, a makeup and fashion designer from Beijing, made the accusation on the social networking platform Xiao Hongshu.
The controversy erupted so much that the topic became trending on Weibo, attracting more than 130 million views. "Not only do they copy, but the cutting style is also bad. It's exhausting. Stylist, please don't embarrass yourself anymore," Yang wrote.
In the music video trailer (MV) for the new song Rockstar released on June 27, Lisa wears a leather jacket with a star-shaped design, similar to the suit Yang designed in 2020.
The design was completed while Yang was studying for a master's degree at the University of the Arts London, inspired by the Tang Dynasty, China's first heavy metal band from Beijing.
Yang told Xiaohongshu that the star symbolizes Beijing and that the wild design reflects the spirit of rock music. To prove that the design is hers, she posted photos of the implementation process. Her star-themed design comes in red with a hand-painted pattern, along with blue, black, and dyed blue versions.
In Yang's design, the blouse is connected to the skirt. However, in the MV, the Kpop singer wears pants, not a skirt. Yang claimed that her dress designs were copied by many people, some of whom contacted the author such as NingNing, the aespa group.
Sharing on her personal page, Yang said that her design may have been taken for ideas. She has tried to legally secure the copyright to her designs in recent years, but has found the process to be too time-consuming and money-consuming, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Yang tried to contact Lisa's stylist but did not receive a response.
On June 27, Yang received an apology email, saying that Lisa wore this outfit only because "the star image is her favorite picture".
"You can rest assured that this will not happen again in the future. We sincerely apologize," the email added.
Yang shared this email on Xiaohongshu, but the online community pointed out that the author was a group of Lisa's fans and not from the singer's company, Lloud.
And yet, in addition to costumes, Lisa was also accused of plagiarizing the MV idea.
Specifically, the scene where Lisa stands between many co-stars with a hijab is said to be 99% similar to a scene in the FE MV! N by male artist Travis Scott.
Many fans of Lisa also have to admit the similarity of the two scenes. However, they think that with just one scene, it is impossible to conclude that Lisa is a plagiarist, but this may be inspired by Travis Scott.
Rockstar is Lisa's first release under Lloud and RCA Records since she left YG Entertainment and Interscope Records last year.
Not only investing in themselves, but even the dancers or mass actors in Lisa's Rockstar MV are also carefully prepared in costumes. In this MV, Lisa performed an even dance performance with 100 Thai dancers. At the casting post for the MV, each dancer is estimated to be paid more than 2 million VND/day.
In addition, she also hired people in the Drag Queen community, some actors to perform large displacement driving or skateboarding on the streets. The salary is also paid depending on the location, such as the large displacement driver group is more than 1 million VND/day, the skateboarding group and mass actors are more than 2 million VND/day, while people in the LGBT/Dragqueen community are paid an amount that can be up to 6 million VND/day.
Previously, the information that Lisa spent a large amount of money to rent a set on Yaowarat Road in Thailand was widely spread. This is a busy area that is famous with locals and tourists alike for its delicious food, as well as the splendor of neon lights.
Thai media pointed out that BLACKPINK's youngest brother rented the entire area on the famous busy street, Chinatown in Bangkok from 2 am to 5 am for 3 consecutive nights. On social network X, netizens shared that Lisa's crew paid nearly 20,000 baht (nearly 15 million VND) to businesses located on this street to close early, to facilitate filming.
She even spent 1,000 baht (about 700,000 VND) to pay those who recorded the video of the MV making process for security purposes before release.
