Despite the danger, the husband risked his body to shield his wife's protective rocks. However, the miracle could not happen and he had to watch in agony as his wife passed away forever in his arms.
In recent days, the news of a magnitude 7.4 earthquake in Hualien (Taiwan, China) has shocked and saddened many people. The sudden incident caused many buildings to collapse, rocks and mud to fall on the foothills, blocking roads and paralyzing traffic.
The earthquake claimed the lives of 12 people. Behind every victim is a heartbreaking story. Among them, the story of Mr. Su and his wife - workers working on the Zhonghuang Expressway has made many people feel sorry.
Taiwan's China Times quoted the husband surnamed Su as saying that he and his wife and many other colleagues were about to work at km183 of the Zhonghuang Expressway on April 3 when the earthquake struck. Because the area where the workers worked was located in a steep position, rocks from the nearby mountain fell here.
"I was running over to my wife to pull her away when suddenly a rock fell where she was standing, causing my wife to immediately lose consciousness. I shielded her with my body and tried to get her out of harm's way. However, I felt that her breathing was getting weaker so I rushed my wife to the hospital with some colleagues. However, she passed away on the way to the emergency room," Su said sadly at his wife's funeral.
"Our job as a worker is dangerous, but to watch our wife die in her arms is hard to describe. Our family now only knows how to rely on each other to live on," Su added.
Currently, 12 people have been killed and more than 1,130 others injured in the earthquake in Taiwan (China). According to Taiwan's National Fire Administration (NFA), more than 700 people were trapped after a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck Hualien County in northern Taiwan on April 3, and dozens have yet to be located.
Severe damage to buildings in Hualien County was reported near the quake's epicenter. Many of those still missing are believed to be around Taroko Gorge, a popular tourist destination.
Rescuers are searching for the missing and trying to reach those still trapped after Taiwan's strongest earthquake in 25 years, which sent rocks and mud tumbling down on the foothills, blocking roads and shaking buildings.
Rescue work has been hampered by frequent aftershocks. Widespread heavy rain is forecast today to cause more difficulties for search and rescue operations. The quake cut off roads and more than 600 people remained trapped in hotels and other locations around the gorge. Rescue work is still going on with great urgency. Yesterday, workers began dismantling a nine-story building in downtown Hualien that was tilted by the quake.
Some local businesses said that on this occasion, many people visit tourist destinations such as Hualien famous for its rugged beauty. However, the earthquake affected business, many bookings were canceled.
