The Tunnels are causing a stir but still creating controversy. Are "ho.t scenes" really necessary or overused?

The Tunnels is a film that has created a strong buzz since its announcement, and has been nurtured by Director Bui Thac Chuyen for 11 years. Although the project has been widely received and earned huge revenue, the film is still at risk of facing heavy capital losses.
After setting an unprecedented record for historical films with nearly 20 billion VND on the Hung Kings' Commemoration Day (April 7), and reaching 80 billion VND after only 4 days of release, as of the evening of April 14, The Tunnels had earned 130 billion VND (according to data from Box Office Vietnam). The journey to bring The Tunnels from idea to the big screen is a long story, lasting more than a decade.
Director Bui Thac Chuyen shared that he spent 11 years to realize this project. "I thought of a story like this but if I didn't complete it, I would feel guilty towards the heroes who sacrificed themselves," he said.
And the commitment to "go all the way" does not stop at telling a meaningful historical story, but also requires a huge budget to realistically recreate the war scene, build vivid visual and sound effects, and meet the expectations of modern audiences.
This is what made The Tunnels one of the most expensive film projects ever in Vietnam.
The film's media representative did not announce the exact figure, but confirmed that the actual budget was "much higher" than the 55 billion VND that some information had mentioned.
Speaking to reporters, Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai Hoa - General Director of Galaxy Studio, the distributor of Tunnels - also said that the production and distribution costs of the film were very high. She affirmed: "With the revenue of Tunnels up to now being 130 billion VND, the film certainly cannot break even."
"Just looking at the setting and visual effects in the film, you can see the significant investment. The figure of 55 billion VND reported by the press does not include marketing and communication costs, as well as distribution fees. Capital will be calculated based on the final revenue of the film," Ms. Hoa confirmed.
This shows that the crew's ambition is not only to create a work of art, but also a film product that can compete technically with international films. The film distributor's representative also said that the media costs have not been fully calculated up to now because the film is still being shown. "However, according to estimates and as far as I know, the break-even revenue of the film Tunnels must reach 160-180 billion VND," said Ms. Hoa.
To understand why a film with a revenue exceeding 100 billion VND like Tunnels still cannot break even, we need to look at the way profits are divided in the Vietnamese film industry.
Thus, applying the above formula, with the current revenue of 130 billion VND, The Tunnels could have brought the producer about 40-50 billion VND. This figure, although impressive, is still quite far from the estimated break-even point of 160-180 billion VND.
This shows that, despite its significant achievements, The Tunnels still needs more support from the audience to get closer to its financial goals.
In addition to domestic box office revenue, The Tunnels also has the potential to increase revenue from other channels, such as selling tickets for international screenings or collaborating with online platforms like Netflix or Galaxy Play.
According to Mr. An Nguyen, these revenues can play an important role in helping the film get closer to the break-even point.
"Regarding the film Underground, to know whether the film can break even, we need to know detailed information about the number of investors, capital contribution ratio, as well as specific costs for marketing and communication. This is business information so no insider can reveal it," Mr. An Nguyen explained.
The initial success of The Tunnels is undeniable. In the first week of its release, especially during the Hung Kings Commemoration Day holiday, the film witnessed a large audience, pushing its revenue to record levels.
However, according to Ms. Mai Hoa, screening performance and revenue growth rate have begun to show signs of adjustment according to general market rules.
"In the first days of release, movies often have very high revenue. After that, the number of viewers will gradually decrease, leading to a decrease in revenue in the following weeks," she explained.
The tunnel is far beyond imagination, the actors are tortured, retreating in the dark Hany Đan13:24:31 07/04/2025In the past few days, director Bui Thac Tuyen's Tunnel has caused great attention in the professional world and the online community. Besides the success of the film is the sacrifice of the heavy roles of the film cast.
