In the past few days, director Bui Thac Tuyen's Tunnel has caused great attention in the professional world and the online community. Besides the success of the film is the sacrifice of the heavy roles of the film cast.
The film does not rely on dialogue to guide the audience's emotions, but fully believes in the power of image, sound and meaningful silences. From the first minutes, the viewer has sunk into a narrow, dark space, where every eye, every breath, every drop of sweat tells its own story.
One of the most impressive scenes in the film is the scene of the guerrilla squad in the tunnel, the only light coming from the creeping oil lamps, creating a space that is both intimate and tense. It is this fragile light, blended with the endless night, that has become an indispensable part of director Bui Thac Chuyen's cinematic language. The way he handles the light is not only to create a context but also to portray the deepest psychology of each character.
Bui Thac Tuyen is not in a hurry to tell the story. He gives the audience time to feel every gesture, each eye of the character. When the character can't speak out loud, they whisper. When they can't whisper, they use their eyes to communicate. This is a revolution in the use of voice in Vietnamese cinema, it can be said that at least in the history of contemporary Vietnamese cinema. And it is this word-saving that forces the actors to use body language to the maximum, bringing a sense of authenticity and emotion more than any flowery dialogue.
Typically, the characters of Quang Tuan and Ho Thu Anh. They don't have eloquent statements, but every look, every action, is filled with pai.n, hope, and resilience. Lamoon Diem Hang, in her first film role, also made a strong impression by the delicate way of expressing the character through small but weighty expressions and gestures.
Another unforgettable segment is when Ba Huong and Tu Pei are about to face the final danger. There were not many words, only their eyes exchanged, their breathing was urgent, and their fists were clenched in the darkness. At that moment, no line can fully convey the depth, pai.n but also extremely tender.
Not only stopping at the image, director Bui Thac Tuyen also very cleverly uses sound to complement the story. The sound in the tunnel was not only the sound of bombs and bullets outside, but also the sound of each soldier's breathing, very soft whispers, or even absolute silence. It is this natural sound that makes the viewer feel suffocating, and at the same time clearly aware of the fierceness of war without any heroic action.
Throughout the process of 2 and a half hours of "stepping underground", the audience almost felt the suffocating atmosphere when walking down a deeper floor with the characters, there was only a whispered voice to reduce air consumption with Seven Following in the middle of the main meeting room. On the contrary, when following Ba Huong to crawl up to the ground, when hiding under the hyacinths on the water by the river with Tu Lap, or when he was trapped with Ut Kho, Luc Tac, Sau Lap, Ban where the enemy's helicopters and tanks were landing, the sound of planes flying overhead, The sound of bombs and suffocating gunfir.e is also described intensely, enough to make viewers tear their hearts.
Another special feature of the cinematic language of Tunnel is the use of night and moonlight as a separate language. In the movie, the night symbolizes uncertainty, for deat.h that is always lurking. But on that same night, the moonlight appeared as a fragile hope, like healing for the souls of soldiers who were facing deat.h every moment.
Like the title of the movie Sun in the Dark, the moonlight in the movie is the sun of the underground soldiers. It is not only a physical light, but also a light of teamwork, love and faith in the future. The moonlight when shining on the dark ground does not need to be bright, but it is enough to dispel the darkness in the soul of each soldier, highlighting the gentle but intense beauty of the film.
Tunnel: Quang Tuan blushed because he asked for a 'close' scene from the director, sacrificing 14kg Hoàng Anh11:37:50 04/04/2025After two months of harsh training, from 77kg to 63kg, Quang Tuan was determined to transform to completely play the role of a guerrilla soldier in Tunnel: The Sun in the Dark.
