After two months of harsh training, from 77kg to 63kg, Quang Tuan was determined to transform to completely play the role of a guerrilla soldier in "Tunnels: The Sun in the Dark".
In the film, Quang Tuan plays Tu Pedal - a Cu Chi guerrilla soldier, inspired by the hero To Van Duc. To transform into a character, he applied a strict training regimen: jumping rope for 45 minutes a day, strict diet even on Tet. As a result, he lost 14kg, achieved a thin appearance and determined eyes of guerrilla soldiers in the past.
Not only changing his appearance, Quang Tuan also learned history, met veterans and directly learned the technique of planting and removing bombs and mines from Mr. To Van Duc. These experiences helped him gain a deeper understanding of the hardships and dangers faced by the guerrillas.
On the set, Quang Tuan performed many dangerous action scenes by himself. In a scene swept by the enemy, he was thrown away due to the pressure of the petrol bomb. In another scene, he had to dive underwater for three or four minutes with only a small straw. "At that time, my heart was pounding, my chest was squeezed, I was worried about whether I could bear it," he said.
Quang Tuan also added that the intimate scene with Thu Anh in "Tunnel: The Sun in the Dark" had to be filmed twice. Director Bui Thac Tuyen asked actors to be strong when expressing their desire to live and be happy in the situation of bombs, fire and bullets and facing the thin line between life and deat.h.
"Tunnels: The Sun in the Dark" tells the story of a group of 21 guerrillas led by Bay Theo (Thai Hoa), defending the area even though they are discovered and hunted down by the enemy. The film gathers the cast of Thai Hoa, Ho Thu Anh, Cao Minh, Diem Hang Lamoon, Hoang Minh Triet, Khanh Ly and is scheduled to be released in theaters in April, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the country's reunification.
With a monumental scale, realistic scenes and a suffocating war atmosphere, the film not only recreates the fierceness of the battlefield but also honors the resilient spirit and indomitable will of the soldiers and people of Cu Chi. The film brings an emotional perspective on people who are willing to sacrifice for national independence, turning the darkness of the tunnel into a place to light the flame of patriotism and the desire for freedom.
The film not only depicts breathtaking action scenes or fierce fights, but also creates deep human slices, exploiting the thoughts of each character. After the dust of war, after persistent steps in the ground, they are still human beings with their own aspirations for love, hope and sorro.w.
In the narrow tunnel, in the midst of the extremely tense hours, a quiet love story still flourished. The love of Ba Huong (Ho Thu Anh) and Tu Pedal (Quang Tuan) does not have distant promises, no awkward hugs in the moonlight, but harmony in short moments, eyes exchanged in the dark, whispers of comfort in the hour of deat.h. In the midst of the devastation of the bombs and bullets, they found a small but warm flame that helped them to persevere and be more resilient in battle.
What makes the film really make a deep impression in the hearts of viewers is the re-enactment of the Cu Chi tunnel system - a military feat that has lasted for three decades. The filmmakers have invested elaborately to recreate the tunnel system in the most realistic way, from the cramped, poorly lit spaces, to the intricate multi-storey structure with secret passages, traps, bunkers and food pans. Thanks to the meticulous background design, the audience can clearly feel the suffocation and tension that guerrilla soldiers face every day when living and fightin.g underground.
The film, directed by Bui Thac Tuyen, is not only a cinematic work, but also a poignant reminder of the past, where young people traded their youth, dreams and lives for independence. In the stifling darkness of the earth, amid the roar of bombs and constant hunger, they still hold on tenaciously, still believing in a sunny tomorrow. And it is thanks to those silent sacrifices that we - today's generation - have a peaceful life, the right to dream and pursue the things we love.
