The old man deliberately robbed to get into prison, the story behind made everyone emotional

Recently, the South China Morning Post page published a strange and true story about an old man in China. Because he was too poor, the old man decided to go to prison to rob, hoping to eat well and dress warmly.

It happened in 2008, Mr. Fu Daxin, 69 years old, lives in rural Hunan province, central China. Because he was too poor, the old man decided to find a better place to retire by intentionally robbing to get jail time.

At the Beijing train station, the old man used a fruit knife to threaten a passenger. After that, Mr. Fu was imprisoned according to his will and was able to eat prison food for nearly 2 years.

Now, after 13 years of causing a stir in Chinese public opinion with his unique actions, he has a peaceful life that he has never dreamed of.

"I have been free and can buy anything I like. Now I am satisfied with my life," Mr. Fu told China Youth Daily at his home in Qidong district.

His house, worth 100,000 yuan (VND358 million), was built for him by a nephew with the support of the local government. Now, Mr. Fu has money to buy his favorite foods such as fish, sticky rice, and noodles thanks to an annual allowance for the elderly who have no children and are unable to work.

It is known that in 2008, the old man only received an allowance of 600 yuan (2.1 million dong) per year. Mr. Fu said the money was so meager that he barely had enough to eat.

"Every day I only have 1.6 yuan. What can I eat? While the price of rice at that time was 3 yuan, and pork was 26 yuan/kg," Mr. Fu said. Now, he has received dozens of times the subsidy amount of 9,360 yuan (about 33.5 million dong). According to statistics, the average income in rural areas of China last year was 17,131 yuan (more than 61 million dong).

That year, Mr. Fu heard a story about a sick man who also intentionally committed a crime to get jail time. The old man decided to go to collect scrap to have money to buy a train ticket to Beijing. It took him 10 days by train to Beijing to commit the crime.

At first, he chose a policeman but he was too slow to catch up with him. The second object he targeted was a woman with 300 yuan in her hand, but this woman thought Mr. Fu was mentally ill, so she avoided him. He then tried to snatch a female student's bag but was unable to overpower her. He pulled out his fruit knife and asked the girl to scream "robber". This caught the attention of a policeman standing nearby.

He was immediately arrested and sentenced to 2 years in prison. After going to prison, he was given more nutritious meals, had eggs every morning and was given meat every day. He also has time to rest, read books, play chess and watch television. Since he is over 60 years old, he does not have to work. He also has regular health checks.

In prison, the old man was given 3 meals a day, so he gained 5 kg in the first 3 months. In March 2010, Mr. Fu was released from prison six months early. He shared that he misses his time here very much.

Soon after, he was transferred to a nursing home in Dongguan town, Guangdong, China. Here, he was provided with free accommodation with a government subsidy, but a year later, the old man left because he felt that the food was not as good as in prison.

"After I move out, I can eat whatever I want," he said.

Mr. Fu's old house was renovated by a nephew and the local government with money. Although the house is not too spacious, it is still fully furnished and has an old air conditioner. However, Mr. Fu rarely uses it because he wants to save money.

Currently, his life is relatively comfortable, but he still wants to receive public health care services such as getting more drugs to treat coronary heart disease and herniated disc.

He also wrote a will, preparing for a very simple funeral in the future. But he said he wished at the funeral to have a band sing an opera for two nights. The lyrics talk about what he did, especially how he put himself in a prison in Beijing.
