The "giant" buffalo weighing 1.5 tons was offered more than 27 billion, but the owner still refused to sell.

For many years, the buffalo named Yuvraj has been famous throughout India in particular and the world in general for possessing the genes of the buffalo breed considered to be the best in the South Asian country.

The 1.5-ton super buffalo from Kurukshetra city, Haryana state, northern India recently became the star of the Bhubaneswar Dairy and Fisheries Festival held in late February 2024 in Bhubaneswar, Odisha state.

Yuvraj appeared at the Festival at the invitation of the Odisha government to convey the message to farmers about the need to raise good quality buffaloes to increase milk production in the state.

Like cows, buffaloes are sacred to many Hindu Indians. An estimated 500,000 people paid homage to Yuvraj.

Yuvraj is a 16-year-old bull. Descended from the indigenous Murrah water buffalo breed - considered the best of the 13 recognized buffalo breeds in India - the super buffalo Yuvraj possesses glossy black skin, backward-curving horns, and strong muscles.

To get that attractive appearance, Yuvraj was raised and cared for like a prince - true to the name of this super buffalo - Yuvraj in Hindi means "little prince".

Yuvraj, born in 2008, is named after former Indian cricket star Yuvraj Singh (1981). According to his owner, Mr. Karamveer Singh (58), the buffalo is cared for on a human-like regimen: 5 km of exercise every day and bathed twice, plus massaged with mustard oil. A total of 6 people care for this buffalo every day.

"I spend nearly $70 a day on Yuvraj," said owner Karamveer Singh. But that's nothing compared to the money the golden buffalo brings to its owner.

As a descendant of India's finest buffalo breed, Yuvraj is certainly no ordinary bull. His "seed" earns his owner 150,000 Rupees (nearly $1,800) per ejaculation.

The 16-year-old buffalo consumes a total of 35 kg of milk and food (fruit, wheat, beans, corn, jaggery, sorghum...) every day to maintain his figure and health. So far, he has fathered more than 200,000 calves, his owner said.

In 2022, Yuvraj was one of the few most expensive buffaloes in India. Yuvraj was valued at 9.25 crore Rupees (equivalent to more than 27.6 billion VND).

Many traders have offered this exorbitant price to the owner to buy this buffalo, but Mr. Karamveer Singh refused.

Thanks to that special diet and care, super buffalo Yuvraj still "lays golden eggs" for its owner every day. Every year, Karamveer Singh earns hundreds of thousands of USD (billions of VND) from Yuvraj's "seeds".

Yuvraj's "seed" is in high demand. The buffalo calves born from Yuvraj's sperm weigh between 40 and 50 kg and produce 20 to 30 liters of milk per day when they reach adulthood.

Mr Karamveer Singh said that cattle farmers, dairy farmers and frozen semen traders in the market used to queue up at his house to buy the "seed" of the buffalo Yuvraj.

Not only selling "seeds", Yuvraj buffalo also won many titles and prizes in competitions in India. In total, he won 24 national livestock championships when possessing important indicators of a good buffalo breed.

In addition, Yuvraj has also won the top prize at 17 national cattle shows in India. Indian livestock shows have paid Karamveer Singh up to $5,000 in prize money for his ability to keep this buffalo in good shape.

Dr Hemant Pant, a livestock expert in the neighbouring state of Rajasthan, said paying such a premium for an animal like Yuvraj could be justified. Purebred Murrah bulls of Yuvraj’s quality are rare. Yuvraj’s F1 offspring are expected to have high milk production.
