After being completed by a shipbuilding company in Sweden in 1914, the ship named Baychimo powered by a steam engine became a means of transporting goods and passengers...
After World War I, ownership of the Baychimo belonged to the Hudson Bay Company. This ship made many voyages for the Hudson and carried mostly cargo to and from the Arctic region. It was used for transportation, trading animal skins with the Eskimos and carrying passengers on the west coast of Canada and Alaska.
During its 10th voyage, the Baychimo ship crashed and was never able to dock.
Nature "stole" the ship from the crew's hands
Specifically, on October 1, 1931, Baychimo was on the journey to Vancouver with ship compartments filled with animal skins. Suddenly, a snowstorm arose, the ship was stuck twice in thick ice in the sea near the city of Barrow, Alaska (USA).
In that critical situation, the captain and crew must find a way to survive inside the trapped Baychimo ship.
After 2 weeks, the ship was still stuck in the ice. While 15 crew members were taken to safety by rescue helicopter, the captain and about 14 remaining crew members chose to set up temporary tents on the beach, away from the heavy ship's location. 1,322 tons were trapped about half a mile away, for observation.
Specifically, although the rising temperature caused the ice to melt, a large snowstorm on November 24, 1931 suddenly came, and after only 3 days, the Baychimo ship completely disappeared from their view. .
At that time, everyone in the crew thought that the Baychimo ship had been sunk by the storm, but in fact it was still floating at sea. The proof is that just a few days later, an Eskimo hunter said he discovered the ship appearing at sea about 45 miles from the original location.
The mystery remains unsolved after many decades
Over the years, many times people said they encountered the Baychimo ship - without a driver - floating at sea, but when they tried to get close, it quickly disappeared. The ship quietly glided across the Arctic waters, drifting from place to place and remaining completely intact.
The information is continuously embellished and has no solid basis, causing the story to become more and more mysterious. Until 38 years later, the Baychimo was reported to have been found stuck in ice off the coast of Alaska in 1969. But when an investigation team came to take a look, it was nowhere to be found (?)
Until 2006, there were some sources claiming that the Alaska government continued to propose plans to search for Baychimo, but the results still yielded nothing. Some people believe that the Bauchimo ship was actually sunk, but there are also many theories that it may still be drifting somewhere at sea.
The fate of this ship weighing more than 1,000 tons has remained an unsolved problem for the public, researchers and explorers for decades.
It can be seen that when studying 'ghost ships', people are shocked by the tragic fate of the crew. But there are also 'ghost ships' that are still unknown.
The "ghost ship" drifted at sea for 13 years
On August 11, 1775, the whaling ship Herald discovered a strange ship in the waters off the coast of Greenland near the Arctic Ocean. It is a "ghost ship" with three masts named Octavius. The train sparkled with ice and snow, seemed mysterious and uninhabited.
Along with four people, Captain Warren of the whaling ship boarded the Octavius to find out. They were shocked at the scene before their eyes.
28 sailors passed away, huddled in bed. A woman and a child hug each other, almost intact. A sailor froze while trying to light a fire on the ship's deck.
In the room, the captain - the owner of the ghost ship - is still sitting at his desk, writing in his diary about the fateful trip. Diary page dated November 11, 1762. The crew has been dead for 13 years.
The last location of the Octavius was discovered about 402km from the accident site. It seems that the Octavius did what no other ship could do at the time: It floated on its own through a 402km journey at sea without a single living person on board.
Decoding the world's biggest maritime mystery
Another ghost ship, HMS Terror, was also discovered in the western corridor of the Arctic Ocean. It was carrying more than 120 people and then disappeared along with its sister ship, HMS Erebus.
Later, the explorers discovered a truth. When entering icy waters, the sea water froze around the HMS Terror. The crew abandoned the Terror for the rescue ship HMS Erebus. They hoped to head south to safety.
But the meager rations were not enough to sustain everyone's life. The ghost ship Erebus continues to get lost among thousands of kilometers of icy sea. All 120 crew members died on the HMS Erebus.
Later search teams only found skeletons and logs recording the tragedy on the ship.
The fate of the two ghost ships Erebus and Terror has become one of the world's biggest maritime mysteries. It was not until 2014 and 2016 that the above mysteries were discovered.
Like the Octavius, the Erebus and Terror were frozen and intact when discovered, Arctic Research Foundation spokesman Adrian Schimnowski told CNN.
