The girl unfortunately contracted an insidious disease without special medicine at the age of 27. In the last days of his life, the patient made a decision that left friends and relatives unable to hold back tears.
On December 23, 2023, Michelle Ng (also known as Mike), who lives in Singapore, held a gathering at her home to connect with loved ones one last time, before she passed away from cancer.
AsiaOne said in 2021, when 27-year-old Mike was diagnosed with a rare form of ovarian cancer. In late 2022, she heard more bad news when the cancer had spread to another part of her body.
After realizing all methods were futile with the terminal illness, in 2023 Mike was referred to HCA Hospice Care Facility for support and placed in the organization's home care program.
When HCA's lead social worker Jayne Leong suggested holding a "live" funeral for Mike alongside her loved ones, patients were extremely welcoming to the idea.
"The fact that I was going to have to leave made a decision. I especially want to call this a living funeral because I want us to feel that death is all around us and it's not something too scary," she said.
The funeral was prepared with the atmosphere of a birthday party, because Mike wanted an intimate atmosphere with his loved one, music, good food and words of love. With more than 30 guests in attendance, including HCA staff, they created an unforgettable memory with the ill-fated girl and vice versa.
At the party, attendees were encouraged to write Mike his last letter and participate in a book exchange. Rai, a musician in Mike's favorite local band Jack & Rai, also performed at the event.
"It was a fun day for Mike. She sang and clapped as she watched the live performance and infused the atmosphere with her signature jokes," an HCA employee said.
Sharing with friends and loved ones at the gathering, Mike said: "Thank you for making me feel so happy today. Your presence is truly appreciated. I'm so grateful to hear every laugh, to see every smile of people." On January 2, 2024, more than a week after the "live" funeral, the girl passed away.
Before Mike, there was also a woman in England who unfortunately contracted cancer and prepared her own funeral when she only had a few months to live. The person in question is Tiffany Ryan (37, of Clapham, West Sussex, England).
According to the Express, in April 2021, Tiffany Ryan went to the doctor after discovering an itchy spot just below her collarbone. Biopsies and mammograms revealed she had stage 2 breast cancer, which will require surgery to remove the organ.
Despite undergoing surgery as well as chemotherapy and radiation, the woman could not escape the call of death when she was informed that the cancer had spread to her lungs and pelvis, with no cure.
With only months left in life, Tiffany began planning her own funeral. She didn't want her husband Matt (39, an IT engineer) to have to do this when she died.
Currently, Tiffany has chosen a funeral operator and dress to her liking. "I decided to choose a female funeral executive who I felt really comfortable with," the mother of 2 said.
When doctors told her she only had a few months to live, Tiffany prepared video messages and letters for her two young children. It is known that Tiffany's son has autism.
Despite her condition, the woman said she felt "completely normal" and had no pain. Tiffany and her two children are making final memories together while the children are still unaware of their mother's illness.
