Singer Duc Long: From worker to People's Artist, U70 lives alone, without wife or children, in a small house

Artist Duc Long is famous as the "singing gentleman" in the Vietnamese music industry. After more than 40 years of singing, he is like a silkworm spinning silk, dedicated to singing. Regarding his personal life, he is currently single.

From worker to People's Artist

Artist Duc Long is considered the "singing gentleman" of the Vietnamese music industry. People remember him for his elegant style with a clean suit and familiar rimmed glasses, singing captivating songs with a warm, emotional and extremely technical voice.

After more than 40 years with the singing career, Duc Long has remained stable and has never lost his passion for music. The male artist successfully performed many lyrical songs, Revolutionary songs, Trinh Cong Son's music...

Born in 1960 in Ha Long City, artist Duc Long lost his parents when he was 8 years old. During his difficult childhood, he had to do all kinds of jobs from brick making, porting to pulling carts... to support himself and have money for school.

Later, Duc Long worked as a worker at Hon Gai Coal Processing Enterprise. Here, he began participating in the singing competition of miners. When he won the Gold Medal at the National Mass Art Festival Region I in 1978 with the song Ha Long Afternoon, his name became more known.

In 1982, artist Duc Long became a member of the Air Defense - Air Force Song and Dance Troupe. In 1989, he transferred to the Song and Dance Troupe of the General Political Department of the Vietnam People's Army.

To pursue the path of professional singing, Duc Long registered to major in Vocal Music at the Hanoi Conservatory of Music. Since 1994, he became a singer of the Vietnam Music and Dance Theater.

After more than 40 years of pursuing a singing career, Duc Long's name is associated with many songs that are loved by the audience such as Sea of Memory, Song in the Hammock, Dreaming of a Far Away Place, Hanoi and Me... In particular, with the song Truong Ca of Lo River, he won the award for best singer and presenter of the Vietnamese song Truong Ca of Lo River in the national chamber competition.

Not only is he a singer performing on stage, artist Duc Long also teaches at the Vietnam National Academy of Music. He has trained many generations of students such as Tung Duong, Minh Thu, Hien Anh... In 2007, he was awarded the title of Meritorious Artist by the State.

With many contributions to the country's music industry, in 2023, Duc Long was on the list of artists awarded the title of People's Artist in the 10th round by the President.

Artist Duc Long shared that over the years, the press has written so much about his life, whether he is rich or poor, how he lives, ups and downs or fame, all have been written enough, now the only thing left is singing and lyrics. His thoughts, words of sharing, and words of love for the audience.

It is known that in real life, artist Duc Long lives a private and simple life. He was once married but soon became single. The male artist confided that the reason his marriage broke up was because the couple's feelings were gradually fading. They broke up peacefully and still treated each other cordially like post-divorce friends.

Since then, there have been ghosts coming to Duc Long, but he still chooses to live alone. Although he is single, the male artist said that he is not lonely because he is "used to loneliness" and does not want to bother anyone.

Furthermore, Duc Long also has many friends. His small house in Hanoi is always filled with laughter and singing whenever his friends and students come to visit and practice singing. When he has time, the male artist goes on trips everywhere or gathers with friends.

Artist Duc Long admitted that he is an emotionally rich person but not materially rich. While around him, many of his contemporaries had wealthy properties, and some of his students were richer than him, until now, Duc Long still lived alone in a small house on Le Duan street. The male artist also does not have a luxury car or savings.

But for Duc Long, property is never a measure of happiness. The male artist confided that his most fulfilling life is singing. He was content to live just enough to devote himself fully to art.

Artist Duc Long said: "I am loved by domestic and overseas audiences. I already feel happy. So if there is a greater love, I cannot bear it."

Every day, in addition to singing, Duc Long also teaches classes. Many generations of students were taught by him and became famous such as singers Tung Duong and Minh Thu. In particular, even though he did not have much money, he was always willing to help poor students over the years.

At the age of 63, artist Duc Long is still full of energy when standing on stage and always wants to contribute more to art. He confided: "For me, the biggest fear is not being able to sing. Besides that, I... am not afraid of anything."
