Thanh Hai is considered the creator of the musical soul for a series of famous cai luong plays such as Doi Co Luu, To Anh Nguyet, Han Mac Tu, Chuyen Tinh Lan and Diep, Trang Hoa Mai...
Thanh Hai, a Northern bo.y who loves reformed opera
Musician Thanh Hai was born in 1957 in Hai Phong. He comes from a family with a tradition of reformed opera. His father was a zither musician, and his mother was reformed opera artist Bich Dan of the Phuong Dong Reformed Opera Troupe.
At the ag.e of 6 or 7, Thanh Hai was fascinated by the sounds of the zither and the lyrics on the radio. So his father taught him to play the zither.
Realizing that his son had outstanding talent, his father thought of finding a better teacher to develop his son's talent.
Thanh Hai's older sister, artist Kim Ha, worked at the Liberation Radio Station. She said that there were musicians from the South who played very well in the North, so she arranged for Thanh Hai to study with teacher Ut Du.
Thanh Hai was also fortunate to meet the artist couple Thanh Hung - Ngoc Hoa who guided him. When he was 11 or 12 years old, Thanh Hai was continuously listened to for months by the couple on tapes and CDs of famous Southern musicians such as Van Vi, Van Gioi, Nam Co, Bay Ba, and Hai Thom.
Just listening and practicing playing, the 16, 17 year old bo.y's playing began to become famous on the radio in the North.
When Liberation Radio performed the play "The Tyrant" (author: Le Duy Hanh), the orchestra of about 15 musicians had only Thanh Hai playing classical music with the guitar, and he was the youngest, making everyone admire the young man's outstanding talent.
Around 1976, Thanh Hai went to the South and had the opportunity to meet and work with musicians and instrumentalists that he had listened to and admired such as Van Vi, Van Gioi, Nam Co, Bay Ba, and Hai Thom.
Having met good teachers, Thanh Hai's ability improved day by day.
The talented musician
Around 1978, musician Thanh Hai began to pursue a professional career in Cai Luong. He was in charge of Cai Luong music for many famous troupes such as the City Performing Arts Troupe, Cai Luong Troupe 2-84, and Tran Huu Trang Cai Luong Theatre...
Thanh Hai's reputation was built not only because of his talent but also because of his intense passion for reformed opera and his diligence in researching and creating reformed opera music.
He can play many musical instruments such as violin, organ, guitar, zither, zither, gourd, trumpet...
He once confided: "A musician, a composer sometimes only needs to know and specialize in 1 or 2 musical instruments. But I like to explore and learn many musical instruments so that when I write music, I know the features of each instrument, which will make it easier to harmonize and arrange."
Because he knows a lot, the reformed music of the plays he directs always has its own unique features and charm for the listeners.
In the play To Anh Nguyet, he composed the background music and also composed the song in the opening scene. The song Truong Tuong Tu in the play is a song of resentment in Cai Luong, but he arranged and harmonized it in a new way.
At first, some people in the profession refused because they thought it "destroyed" tradition, but later the arrangement won over the audience and became an attractive piece, a highlight of the play.
Musician Thanh Hai is also known as the person who, together with musician Van Gioi, adapted the song Vong Kim Lang, which is very popular in reformed operas and is often used as the theme song in reformed opera and amateur music programs on radio stations.
Passed away, colleagues mourn
Ms. Kim Lien shared with the media that her husband - musician, People's Artist Thanh Hai passed away at 3:45 p.m. at his home due to lung cancer, at the ag.e of 68. About a month ago, he coughed a lot and was in poor health, so he was hospitalized at Nguyen Trai Hospital (District 5, Ho Chi Minh City).
Doctors diagnosed him with late-stage lung cancer that had spread throughout his body. Due to pai.n and a nasogastric tube, People's Artist Thanh Hai could not speak and therefore did not leave any last words. The funeral is scheduled to take place at the Artists' Pagoda (Go Vap, Ho Chi Minh City) - the resting place of many generations of stage artists.
Recently, he has not had enough strength to perform at art events, including the A O Show - a bamboo circus show combining traditional music that he has devoted much of his heart to.
On his personal page, director Nguyen Thanh Hiep shared: "Today, he has left the stage forever. We - those who had the chance to work with him - can only say goodbye with tears and unforgettable memories. The memories I cherish most are the days working with him at the Golden Stage, in the play "Sour Leaf" directed by Tran Ngoc Giau."
The director recalled: "I was working as an editor at that time, and he - the silent but powerful musician - was the musical soul of the play. There were nights when the rehearsals were late, the whole crew was exhausted, but he still sat there, adjusting each bea.t, pushing each breath, trying to match the character's mood, trying to make the notes just enough to touch the audience's hearts."
According to director Nguyen Thanh Hiep, People's Artist Thanh Hai loves his job, is dedicated, and always gives his all to reformed opera. People's Artist Thanh Hai is an exemplary artist, talented yet humble, good at his job, always knows how to listen, is calm, and profound.
With his skillful playing, People's Artist Thanh Hai is considered the number one student of the famous musician People's Artist Vien Chau. Thanks to his talents, he is also considered by People's Artist Bach Tuyet - an old tree of the craft village - as a soul mate, accompanying her in many artistic stages. "Cai luong chi bao" once said about People's Artist Thanh Hai: "You play 5-6 instruments alone, you travel the world like a symphony orchestra".
Bach Tuyet said: "People's Artist Thanh Hai is an indispensable person in my artistic career". From the 1980s until now, every project, program, and small or large cai luong stage, domestic and foreign, of Bach Tuyet... has the mark of the musician from Hai Phong.
The two sisters understand and are in harmony both in work and life. Their love for cải lương and their concern for this traditional art form motivate them to carry out new projects.
Before that, right after hearing the news of his close friend's hospitalization, People's Artist Bach Tuyet - a close friend in the arts, was present at the hospital to visit and encourage him. She emotionally shared: "Thanh Hai is not only a talented musician, but also a soul that keeps the rhythm of Cai Luong. Now that he is sick, I feel like a part of Cai Luong is also silent."
Also visiting him were some young actors from the Cai Luong Academy - where he was teaching before being hospitalized.
Young artists are familiar with the image of a diligent teacher, meticulously teaching each vá»ng cá» verse, each bea.t in difficult songs. To them, People's Artist Thanh Hai is not only a great artist but also a person who ignites the fire of the profession, instilling in them faith in the future of cải lương.
People's Artist Bach Tuyet was accuse.d by a British Doctor of using a fake degree, and immediately released evidence to counterattack. Hoàng Phúc10:10:06 29/11/2024In recent days, social media has been spreading information related to the degree of People's Artist Bach Tuyet. One person said that the artist's name could not be found on the list of alumni of RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Art), suspecting that her doctorate is fake.
