South Korean media reported on December 4, Blackpink once again proved its popularity with another historic achievement on Spotify - one of the world's most important music platforms.
Specifically, during the recent launch of "Spotify Wrapped" for 2023, a comprehensive list showcasing the most streamed and prominent artists on the platform was announced.
Accordingly, Blackpink is the featured artist on this list. The globally popular K-pop girl group has won the title of Most Streamed Girl Group globally in Spotify in 2023 (5 years in a row).
This achievement is especially notable given that Blackpink does not make a comeback as a group in 2023.
The only track of the 4 girls is a promotional song for the video game "The Game".
Despite the absence of active promotions and new group projects, Blackpink manages to outperform other female artists, many of whom regularly release music throughout the year, including TWICE.
Since 2019, Blackpink has consistently held the coveted No. 1 spot on Spotify's annual list, a testament to the group's charisma when streaming 4 girls' hits.
This achievement highlights the group's significant influence in the music scene, setting high standards for other girl groups, especially those from Asia.
Meanwhile, recently, Blackpink once again made history, proving its status as the "Queen of YouTube".
According to Soompi, at around 6am on December 4, the music video for Blackpink's 2019 hit "Kill This Love" surpassed 1.9 billion views on YouTube worldwide.
"Kill This Love" is the second music video of the K-pop group in history to reach 1.9 billion, after Blackpink's "DDU-DU DDU-DU". This is also the 3rd Kpop MV to achieve this overall milestone (the first is PSY's "Gangnam Style" MV).
"Kill This Love" was released on April 5, 2019, which means that this MV took 4 years, 7 months and 29 days to reach 1.9 billion views.
Currently, Blackpink is not only the only Kpop group whose MV surpassed 1.9 billion views (BTS's MVs have not reached this milestone), but also the first Kpop artist to have 2 MVs surpass 1.9 billion views on YouTube.
In another development, (G)I-DLE recently performed at Jingle Ball LA and impressed with a series of hits of the group. However, the way the group conceptualized the performance and appearing in strong black outfits reminded the audience of BLACKPINK. Many comments even claim that (G)I-DLE consulted ideas from the top K-Pop girl group today.
Specifically, the stage of (G)I-DLE allegedly copied BLACKPINK's iconic intro at Coachella this year. In it, Soyeon takes on the role of stirring up the crowd and begins with, "How is Jingle Ball? This is (G)I-DLE". The sentence is repeated similarly to Jennie's tone in Coachella. In addition, the choreography in this intro is also pointed out by the audience that is up to 80% similar to BLACKPINK's intro.
The fact that the stage showcased at BLACKPINK's Coachella music festival had a huge impact right after it ended, becoming a viral trend on social media. This is also the reason why leader (G)I-DLE Soyeon faced criticism and received many negative comments due to his alleged copying of Jennie.
For now, Soyeon and (G)I-DLE's agency have remained silent on this wave of criticism.
