Rookie g.irl group YG Entertainment has officially released their debut mini album titled "BABYMONS7ER", and also released the title music video "Sheesh". This is also an important milestone marking the official debut of new member Ahyeon.
Therefore, it is not surprising that the MV quickly attracted more than 14 million views in 13 hours of airing, proving its strong attraction and great anticipation from the audience.
After the debut of YG Entertainment's iconic g.irl groups, 2NE1 (2009) and Blackpink (2016), followed by juniors BABYMONSTER made a big wave in the K-Pop music scene marking their debut with 7 members: Ruka, Pharita, Asa, Ahyeon, Rami, Rora, and Chiquita.
The 7-track debut album opened the way with two singles, "Batter Up" and the 7-member version of "Stuck In The Middle". In addition, they also introduced the song "Like That" produced by Charlie Puth, a meaningful tribute for the girls in the group.
However, some fans have expressed concerns about their similarities to the national g.irl group BLACKPINK. This is not a new problem in the Korean entertainment industry, as many new groups often face comparisons and pressure from groups that have been successful before.
B.ABY MONSTER's song "Sheesh" has caused a lot of controversy and comparisons that resemble Blackpink's "How You Like That", not only in terms of music but also in terms of visuals and performance style. Both songs are partly emotional with strong electronic music, catchy harmonies.
However, despite the similarity in tone, having "Sheesh" repeat the purpose of the hook can be memorable to the audience, but can also backfire. There have been criticisms from people about this hook, claiming that it is not only unflattering but also lacks impressiveness. The repetition of the chorus twice in the song and the 180-degree "turn" in the outro, with a completely different melody flow, also causes a rather strange feeling for the listener. However, the group's vibrant rapping and signature harmonies remain the highlights, along with deep lyrics and distinct expression, reflecting B.ABY MONSTER's identity.
Being compared to their famous seniors, B.ABY MONSTER was advised to focus on developing their own identity and style, instead of simply copying elements from other groups. This is also an opportunity for the group to express their originality and creativity in a competitive music market.
B.ABY MONSTER is also facing challenges in building their own and separate image so as not to be compared too much to BLACKPINK. They need to have a good marketing and promotion strategy, along with developing unique music and performance styles to create a unique mark.
Some fans believe that B.ABY MONSTER has the potential to become an independent and popular g.irl group worldwide if they can harness and develop their identity in a unique and creative way. This poses a major challenge but also presents a great opportunity for the band to shine in the international music community. To overcome the comparison and create a niche, BABYMONSTER needs to continue to work hard and be creative in all its activities, from music to visuals and stage performances.
However, only time will tell if YG Entertainment's rookie g.irl group can make its own mark on BABYMONSTER. Creating a unique and outstanding reputation will require creativity, effort, and will they be able to overcome the big shadow of BLACKPINK seniors?
