According to Professor, Dr. Tran Trung Dung, Director of Orthopedic and Musculoskeletal Trauma, Vinmec Healthcare System, Nguyen Xuan Son's surgery was not too difficult technically, but there was a lot of pressure.

"Because the surgery was performed on a player who has made many contributions to the national football team and is being watched by millions of fans, the surgical team faced a lot of psychological pressure," said Professor Tran Trung Dung.

Fans expect Xuan Son to soon return to top competition, forcing doctors to make careful, thorough calculations from surgery to recovery.

Xuan Son's injury was quite severe, with two very large separate fractures, one 7cm and one 3cm. With the goal of helping the player recover quickly, especially the ability to heal the bone, the doctors decided to perform a closed intramedullary nailing technique to ensure that the fractured fragments would not be displaced and that the fracture site would not have to be opened.

The surgery for player Xuan Son was closely monitored by a C-arm (intraoperative x-ray machine) to ensure anatomical, correction, and fixation requirements.

Professor Dung said that in the process of treating injuries, surgery only accounts for 10%, the remaining 90% depends on post-operative care. Therefore, after surgery, doctors calculate and plan a specialized exercise and nutritional regimen for Xuan Son, ensuring quick bone healing and no muscle loss.

MSc. Dr. Nguyen Quyet Thang, Chief Technician, Center for Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, Vinmec Healthcare System, said that after surgery, Xuan Son's rehabilitation process will take at least 6 months, divided into 4 stages with clear goals.

During the first 1-2 weeks, doctors aim to control pain, reactivate neuromuscular function, restore mobility, and prevent complications. Subsequent phases focus on strengthening, improving range of motion, balance, and physical preparation.

"After 6 months of maximum intensity training and meeting standards, Son will be allowed to compete again," said Dr. Thang.

The biggest challenge in Xuan Son's case is the transition from high-intensity activity to an injured state, forcing limited mobility.

This not only affects the physical but also the mental, requiring close coordination between specialties such as nutrition, psychology, rehabilitation, surgery, along with understanding and strict adherence to the treatment regimen.

"After surgery, Son needs to follow a scientific exercise regimen, including time control and weight bearing level to maintain physical strength and promote effective bone healing," said Dr. Thang.

In the early stages of recovery, Xuan Son was supported with modern equipment such as a European standard cold compress system, an electric stimulator to relieve pain and prevent muscle atrophy, a training support robot, a biofeedback muscle training system from Germany, and a professional static and dynamic balance system.

To optimize results, the player's nutrition is monitored daily, based on individual needs and training intensity.

Nguyen Xuan Son, whose Brazilian name is Rafaelson, was born in 1997 and became a Vietnamese citizen in September 2024, becoming the first naturalized player to be called up to the national team since 2009. Xuan Son was injured in the ASEAN Cup final match at Rajamangala Stadium, Thailand on the evening of January 5.

The hard fall caused his right leg to bend, causing a serious injury. After receiving first aid on the field, Xuan Son was quickly transferred to Bangkok Hospital for examination. A day after the injury, the player was taken back to Vietnam for surgery.
