Currently, Nguyen Xuan Son is actively training and resting to recover after surgery. Previously, in the final match of the AFF Cup 2024, the male player suffered a serious injury and was taken to the hospital for emergency treatment.

According to Prof. Dr. Tran Trung Dung, Director of Orthopedic Trauma - Musculoskeletal, Vinmec Healthcare System, recovery requirements are the biggest challenge in the treatment story. Doctors must calculate the overall problem from surgery, therapy, nutrition and exercise, the goal is to maintain muscle strength, control weight, and practice difficult movements suitable for soccer after the bone healing period.

This expert said that Xuan Son's surgery was a closed nailing technique. This method will not open the fracture, preserving the integrity of the muscles and the periosteum. The doctor only drives 1 nail through the fracture and fixes the nail in the spinal canal.

"However, we have to calculate each screw meticulously. For normal people, there is no need to calculate so carefully to ensure normal movement and daily activities.

But for player Nguyen Xuan Son, the screw must be perfect, not protruding even 1mm, ensuring that when the bone heals, you can practice again without any problems.

Because if the screw protrudes just 1mm, it will cause pain to the player when receiving the ball. Therefore, we have to calculate each screw and measure it carefully on the computer," said Professor Dung.

Professor Dung once again emphasized that the expectation for Xuan Son to return to his peak, for the surgical team, depends not only on the results of the surgery, but also greatly on the recovery journey afterwards.

"Surgery only accounts for 10%, for athletes to be able to return to competition, the post-operative work, training, rehabilitation, nutrition... behind are extremely important, accounting for 90%," said Professor Dung.

In Xuan Son's case, when there is still an intramedullary nail inside the tibia, the possibility of re-injury, or re-fracture of the bone, is very low because the hardness of the nail is very high.

However, other injuries can still occur because football is a contact sport, no one can predict the injuries that players may encounter.

Currently, the purpose of training, nutrition, rehabilitation... is to keep Xuan Son from gaining weight, from muscle atrophy, and from muscle weakness.

Controlling Xuan Son from gaining weight, when suddenly reducing high-intensity physical activities, with Son's physique, is already a great success. His club shared that just by reducing the intensity of training a little, Xuan Son can gain from 90 to 100kg immediately.

After the bone heals, Xuan Son will enter the rehabilitation training phase, including strengthening muscles, improving joint reflexes, and specialized training.

"This phase lasts from 5 to 6 months. This is the most demanding phase. If the recovery process goes smoothly and Xuan Son strictly follows the instructions, he can completely return to 100% performance within 8-9 months," said Professor Dung.
