A school bus fire in Thailand on the afternoon of October 1 left at least 25 people unsafe and 16 injured, shaking the country. In particular, the touching story of teacher Kanokwan Sripong, who hugged her student tightly until the last moment, made many people sad.
The bus carrying 44 students and teachers of Wat Phraya Sangkharam School, Uthai Thani Province, was on its way back from a picnic when it suddenly caught fire. According to eyewitnesses, the fire started when a wheel exploded, causing the bus to crash into a roadside barrier and quickly engulfed in flames.
During the incident, some teachers and students were lucky to get out, but many were still trapped and could not escape in time. Currently, the bus driver, who is believed to have fled the scene, is still being sought.
The unfortunate teacher in this fire is named Kanokwan Sripong - a teacher at Wat Khao Phraya Sangkharam School. When the functional forces arrived at the scene and began searching and rescuing, Ms. Kanokwan Sripong was found in a deceased state, still holding the student tightly in her arms. Many people could not help but be touched by the actions of the teacher, who always remembers the students even in the moment of life and death.
Khaosod English newspaper said that Ms. Kanokwan Sripong just had a university graduation ceremony on September 26. In the souvenir photo, the young girl standing next to her mother with a bright smile with an emotional caption: "5 years to go all the way. Become a mother's pride. If you are still alive, you will definitely be proud of your daughter."
Many people could not hold back their tears at the teacher's sharing, expressing mercy when she and the students left at such a young age, in a way that no one expected. It is known that currently Thai authorities are still conducting an autopsy to determine the identity of the unfortunate person, and at the same time investigate the cause of the incident.
As of 3 p.m. on October 2, local officials had not confirmed the final death toll. Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who was present at the scene of the incident on October 1, said that 25 people, including 22 students and 3 teachers, did not survive.
However, Trairong Phiwpan, head of the local police's forensic unit, said they had only found 23 people inside the bus.
The incident shocked Thai and international public opinion. On October 2, many Thais dressed in black to mourn those in distress, mainly students, who died when a bus caught fire on the road.
Thailand's Ministry of Education also called on officials to wear black until Friday to offer condolences to the relatives of those in distress. During a session of parliament, all MPs dressed in black and expressed their condolences to the families of the victims. Pheu Thai MPs will wear black for three days.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra burst into tears when he heard the news and promised that the government would cover medical expenses and provide financial support to the victims' families.
The bus fire not only caused human damage but also raised questions about road traffic safety and safety standards of buses. According to the initial investigation, the bus was renovated from an Isuzu truck and used compressed natural gas (CNG), making the possibility of ignition even more serious.
