An 85-year-old woman in Buriram province, Thailand, shocked her family when she was said to have "come back to life" 40 minutes after being declared dead.
On February 5, Sommai Dee-la-at, the granddaughter of Pua Sriphueng (both names are transliterated from Thai), said that at around 9 a.m., she found the old woman unconscious and not breathing. Despite attempts to wake her up, Pua did not respond. Thinking that she had passed away, Sommai called other relatives to pay their respects, according to Khaosod.
Sommai also planned to take her body to the temple to perform the rituals for the deceased. However, 40 minutes later, to everyone's surprise, Ms. Pua suddenly sat up right when the family was preparing to move her "body".
What happened next was even stranger. After waking up, Ms. Pua began to act and behave like a child. The 85-year-old wanted to be held, became irritable, and craved sweets.
Ms. Pua recounted that, during the time she was supposed to have âgone to the other world,â she met and talked with a monk who came to say goodbye to her. Her family believes that Ms. Puaâs good deeds may have helped her âreincarnate.â To thank her for her second chance at life, Ms. Pua asked her children and grandchildren to invite monks to their home to chant sutras and give alms.
This inexplicable phenomenon has occurred in our country. Scientists have determined that this is a clinical death phenomenon, a phenomenon in which the patient's heart has stopped beating, the brain has no activity signal, but it does not mean that the person is dead. However, the reason why the dead person can wake up is still a mystery.
In 2010, Ho Chi Minh City was stirred by the story of a 70-year-old woman named Nguyen Thi Di (Dong Thanh commune, Hoc Mon district, Ho Chi Minh City) who had drowned and suddenly came back to life. On October 7, 2010, after more than 7 hours of falling and floating in the water, her body was discovered and pulled up by people. At this time, her body was stiff, and her nose was no longer breathing. Knowing that there was "no way to save her", the surrounding neighbors immediately covered her with mats, burned incense, and then informed the relatives of the unfortunate woman.
However, while the forensic doctor was conducting the autopsy, the "corpse" suddenly came back to life. At that moment, Mrs. Di's hand waved, everyone panicked and ran away, even Mrs. Di's children and grandchildren did not dare to come near.
This strange story began with an old lady named Le Thi Chenh (Quang Vong commune, Quang Xuong, Thanh Hoa) in 2006. After a near-death illness, she refused to eat or drink anything. A few days later, she became motionless and her heart stopped beating. The whole family mourned for a person who had passed away. While her children and grandchildren were preparing for the funeral, Mrs. Chenh suddenly sat up, bewildered, looking at her children and grandchildren prostrating themselves at her feet, crying bitterly.
The second time happened when Mrs. Chênh turned 97. After calling for a few times without seeing her answer, everyone saw that she had stopped breathing, her limbs were cold, her eyes were closed and her heart had "stopped beating". The sad news of her death was passed on to her children and grandchildren. Everyone in the family gathered to help the family prepare for the funeral. Everything was carefully prepared and when it was time to put her body in the coffin, the old lady was nowhere to be seen. It turned out that she was under the bed and was still alive.
The third time, also the most recent (July 1, 2012). At this time, Mrs. Chênh was 99 years old. When she passed away, her children were mentally prepared, but the old lady suddenly came back to life.
The girl's name is Tran Thi Be Nam, the daughter of a farmer family in An Binh Tay commune, Ba Tri district, Ben Tre province. Be Nam passed the entrance exam to Au Viet College of Economics (Tourism faculty) in 2007. In 2008, doctors discovered that she had a deadly bone cancer, but Be Nam continued to study and graduated in 2009.
In mid-2014, her illness became more serious, and her family had to take her to Cho Ray Hospital for treatment. The illness was so severe that on September 7, the family brought Bé NÄm home on a stretcher. Her body was cold and she was unconscious. Her family had prepared everything for her funeral, from mats, clothes, burial place... all by herself. Relatives and neighbors also came in large numbers. However, on the morning of the third day, Bé NÄm woke up and was able to walk, to the amazement of her relatives and neighbors.
Many people with âcatharsisâ experience slowed breathing, reduced sensitivity, and complete immobility, which can last from a few minutes to several weeks. This condition can mimic epilepsy and Parkinsonâs disease. The patient is aware of their surroundings but has complete paralysis of all voluntary muscles, except those that control eye movement. As a result, many people are falsely declared âdead.â
Researchers recommend that patients be monitored for 10 minutes after death, as that is the time frame in which spontaneous circulation is delayed. Death should not be immediately declared when there are signs of cardiac, pulmonary, and respiratory arrest. Health care professionals and researchers agree that a doctor with the expertise and modern medical equipment can determine if a person is dead.
