On the afternoon of July 27, information about the Ban Ve hydropower dam breaking appeared on social media. This information caused thousands of people living in the communes downstream of the Ban Ve hydropower plant to pack their belongings, take children and the elderly to the high mountains for fear of rising water.
In fact, this is just a false rumor. The police have summoned the livestreamer who spread the news about the Ban Ve hydropower dam collapse for questioning.
According to information from Nghe An Police, the subject was identified as LTS (27 years old, residing in Yen Thang commune, Nghe An).
Authorities determined that at 5:30 p.m. on July 27, the LTS account live-streamed a video with the content: "Hearing the news of the Ban Ve hydroelectric dam breaking, people ran in panic. Hope for peace."
At the police station, Mr. LT S said that during the above mentioned time, S. was at a relative's house in Hoa Nam block, Tuong Duong commune. Seeing people shouting about the hydroelectric dam breaking, although he had not verified the information, he took out his phone and broadcast live to inform everyone. After knowing that the news about the dam breaking was false, Mr. S. removed the post on his personal page.
It is known that in the past few days, storm No. 3 has caused heavy rains, creating historic floods in many highland communes of Nghe An. The floods have killed 4 people, swept away hundreds of houses, submerged thousands of houses, and destroyed many traffic works, irrigation works, schools, etc.
People here have to cope with life without electricity, lack of clean water and food due to landslides, many villages are still isolated.
On July 27, each relief vehicle and group of people from all over the country traveled over 300km of heavily damaged roads to deliver each bag of food and medicine to the people affected by the flood. Some groups had to leave their goods at the beginning of the village, then together with the people used makeshift rafts and boats to transport the goods to the isolated point. Bags of rice, instant noodles, cooking oil, clean water, and clothes were delivered to families who were hungry and cold after the historic flood.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hau, Deputy Secretary of the Youth Union of Village 6, Dong Hieu Commune, Nghe An Province, shared: Hearing that people in My Ly and Nhon Mai communes were facing many difficulties due to floods, young people and women in the village contributed money, rice, and instant noodles to share and support the people.
According to Ms. Hau, she went to Muong Ly on the evening of July 26 and witnessed the flood sweeping away many properties of the villagers. However, in difficult times, the people here still help each other.
The houses that were still standing shared sleeping quarters and food. Local officials and border guards stayed in the villages, providing relief and helping people have a place to eat and sleep, so they wouldn't have to live in the open when they lost their homes.
According to Mr. Nguyen Anh Doai, Secretary of the Party Committee of My Ly commune, 210 houses in this commune were completely swept away, and 187 others collapsed or were severely damaged.
Currently, many villages of My Ly commune are still completely isolated, so the commune government uses small boats to transport relief goods, bringing food and medicine directly to the people.
"The My Ly commune government has reported to the Nghe An provincial People's Committee to find a plan to build a resettlement area for the people of Xieng Tam village in particular and the villages in the area in general. We are very grateful to the rescue teams who have overcome the flood to bring relief goods to the remote border communes of Nghe An province so that people can soon overcome difficulties," Mr. Doai shared.
Currently, the lives of people in the communes affected by natural disasters are very difficult, and they need sympathy and help. In order for people to soon stabilize their lives, the Party Committee, government and functional forces of Nghe An province are making efforts to overcome the consequences of floods, open and repair roads, ensure communication, and support food, drinking water and medicine.
Responding to the call of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Nghe An province, promoting the spirit of solidarity "mutual love, mutual assistance", "the rich help the poor" of the nation, the provincial leaders and key officials at the provincial level donated, supported, and shared the losses and damages of the people in the West to overcome the consequences of storms and floods, and soon stabilize their lives.
After more than 2 days of calling, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the province received support of over 38.5 billion VND from localities, units, businesses, philanthropists, and organizations inside and outside the province for the people of the Western region of Nghe An province.
