Many young people have become famous thanks to their ability to eat and drink, become "mukbang stars" on social networks, and earn huge income. That's why many people have defied everything and bypassed the audience's eyes to have unique mukbang videos.
Mukbang comes from two Korean words: "mukja" (eating) and "bangsong" (broadcast). Mukbang refers to a trend on social networks in which the main character eats a large amount of food while filming it live for many viewers.
However, these holy eaters only pretend to eat and then spit out. Typically, famous Korean girl Moon Bok Hee, whose YouTube channel Eat With Boki has more than 9 million followers. Not only does Bok Hee have unique and attractive mukbang performances, she also attracts many viewers with her beautiful appearance.
In 2020, she faced criticism and was almost ostracized for her serious deception. Netizens pointed out that Bok Hee displayed a large amount of food in front of the screen, but only pretended to eat it. She put food in her mouth, pretended to chew it, then spit it out.
All of her deceitful actions were then erased to cover the eyes of viewers. Netizens even discovered that she often gestured at scenes that needed to be edited.
Most of her videos are not seamless, food and objects in the scene are changed position. She was accused of both deceiving followers and wasting food. Faced with fierce opposition from viewers, she spoke up and provided evidence that she did not edit the video. However, the videos are not convincing enough. After that, she had to delete and make some videos private.
Previously, she was also accused of not disclosing the receipt of advertising fees. She accepted sponsorship from the store but lied that she bought the food herself. She had to publicly send a nearly 1,000-word apology letter on her personal page to appease the audience.
Another individual chose to become famous through creating his own scandal. Nicholas Perry, from America, is famous by his stage name Nikocado Avocado. He was originally a violinist but switched to YouTube and is known for his mukbang videos. He has nearly 4 million followers on YouTube.
Since 2016, videos of Nicholas Perry binge eating have attracted the passionate attention of audiences. Many people like to watch this guy devour large amounts of food in front of the camera. He is famous for using many offensive tricks just to get views.
In 2019, the case of Nicholas Perry being accused of harassment caused a stir. Female YouTuber Stephanie Soo accused him of harassing her through text messages and taking photos without permission in her house.
She also accused him of being manipulative and a bully, causing her to panic and worry. He pressured her to go online and badmouth another YouTuber.
After that, Nicholas Perry posted a video with counter-evidence, which publicly revealed photos taken against him, accusing Stephanie Soo of completely knowing but still letting him do it. The two continuously attacked and denounced each other, attracting a lot of attention from online users.
In 2021, Nicholas Perry revealed that the heated argument in the past was completely staged to benefit both his and Stephanie Soo's careers. In an interview, he said: "We both know that this will be the best thing for our careers. We have taken our names further, becoming known to many people."
In 2019, "food god" Jeong Man Su, nicknamed Banzz, suffered severe consequences for deceiving the audience and falsely advertising the effectiveness of weight loss products.
Banzz is one of the famous mukbang YouTubers in Korea. He has more than 3.2 million subscribers to his YouTube channel. He is famous for maintaining a toned physique, despite eating a lot of food during broadcasts.
He was accused of misleading viewers about the functions and effects of drugs and dietary supplements through his mukbang videos. He makes users think that just by using the product they can lose weight quickly and safely.
Meanwhile, to achieve the desired results, in addition to using the product, customers must exercise and maintain a diet.
He initially denied all accusations, but after being investigated, he was forced to apologize. However, he still affirmed that he had no intention of deceiving viewers. His ads are based on a combination of online reviews.
In the end, he did not have to go to jail but was fined $4,100 for false advertising about the effectiveness of weight loss pills.
The scandal caused the number of followers on his channel to decrease by more than 100,000 people. He also paused his activities for a while before returning.
Many young people have accepted to give up office and professional careers, and even drop out of school to follow the Mukbang path. Many Youtubers who are quite stable in other fields also turned to Mukbang because they found it "delicious".
In the past year, people have witnessed many hospitalizations and even logouts of many Chinese and Korean food and beverage Vloggers. Some people have stomach ulcers because too much food causes high blood pressure, and some people have food fear syndrome. Recently, a Chinese Mukbang suddenly died because he ate a lot of greasy food and the amount of lipid in his blood increased.
Many people, if they follow Vietnamese Mukbangs, will see their "terrible" eating level. Everyone sat down to eat with a large tray of food, it took 4-5 people to eat it all. There are Vloggers, interacting and eating several kilos of seafood, grilled chicken, and many other vegetables and fruits at the same time. One performer drank 20 different types of milk tea at once and ate dozens of loaves of bread.
Besides, there are raw dishes, spicy dishes... This way of performing food makes a part of the audience excited and appreciative, but another part is apprehensive on behalf of the performer. Because too much food is consumed in the body at once, over a long period of time, health risks are inevitable.
Not to mention the fact that, in order to attract views, many Vloggers also have to constantly come up with tricks, strange dishes, and strange ways to eat to attract customers. From there, it leads to cheap and offensive views-seeking behavior. For example, in the case of Mrs. Tan's son, he put a whole raw chicken in the pot and cooked it without plucking its feathers to eat. There are even Vloggers who eat live snakes, centipedes, geckos, and cockroaches just to increase interaction.
Besides, this profession that is popular with young people also raises concerns about the problem of awareness in eating among a part of the people.
