On the evening of June 13, in the competition episode recorded in Singapore, Phuong My Chi brought a mashup performance of Ly Bac Bo, including folk songs such as Ba Cong Di Cho Troi Mua, Ly Cay Da, Ba Rang Ba Ri, and Day Xe Bo, composed by the group DTAP .
The performance is inspired by the culture and life of the Northern people, blending many modern music genres such as pop, house with typical folk sounds.
The climax of the performance was an excerpt from Pushing the Ox Cart, composed based on the short story The Beggar's Wife by writer Kim Lan. Phuong My Chi clearly demonstrated the characteristic vibrato technique of Bac Ninh Quan Ho through the lyrics:
"A stranger's rice cake/ The wind blows fragrantly/ A sentence of flirtation/ Your love is enough/ Fills a bowl of fallen jade/ The wind goes up to the sky/ We are a new couple/ Laughing, forgetting the sun of life."
Not only impressing with her strong voice and skillful technique, Phuong My Chi also combined the drum dance in her performance, making judges Truong Luong Dinh and Thai Nha Kien unable to hide their excitement, dancing to the melody.
The female singer shared that she and her crew had discussed carefully the staging process, aiming to introduce to international friends a performance that is imbued with Vietnamese identity, but still youthful and creative.
"We young people should all learn from her, especially now that many people want to pursue pop music. Phuong My Chi chose to follow the path of Vietnamese folk music. She has found her own appeal in this genre of music and I like that," judge Thai Nha Kien commented.
Meanwhile, Chinese music producer Long Han, a member of the online jury, appreciated Phuong My Chiâs boldness in combining traditional music with many modern elements. Meanwhile, Mew Amazing â a Vietnamese music producer â expressed surprise at her performance style and singing voice.
Despite receiving "a shower of compliments" from experts, Phuong My Chi still stopped before her opponent Vuong Hoang Hao. Notably, in the previous episode, she did not receive any votes from the two advisors Truong Luong Dinh and To Huu Bang, causing many viewers to express their dissatisfaction.
Amidst the controversy, Phuong My Chi's manager spoke up. He said that the important thing is that the female singer has completed her mission of promoting Vietnamese culture to international friends.
"Seeing everyone arguing so fiercely, this is what I think:
We have determined from the beginning that in Sing! Asia , Chi has two missions: Bringing Vietnamese culture to the world and going as far as possible to reach the finals.
Letâs talk a little about the format of the show: If you win the previous round, youâre in the quarterfinals. And in the next round, youâll go to the next stage to meet the winner of that stage. Winning or losing is no longer important, and cultural exchange and bringing culture to the world is the priority.
Once you're safe, it's important to have a strategy for distributing your power wisely. The goal is to win the war, not a single fight. But that last one was great, wasn't it???"
Through the manager's sharing, people speculate that the female singer will probably go very far in this playground and the crew is "hiding their cards".
Previously, this manager shared about the process of choosing to participate in two programs at the same time: Em Xinh Say Hi and Sing! Asia. According to him, this was a difficult decision, requiring consideration of many factors from schedule, health, to image strategy.
"A decision â but one that came after much deliberation and pressure.
Thanks for saying: 'I want to succeed, but you guys are young, you have a whole youth ahead of you, you not only want to succeed but also want to experience.'
My decision had to be carefully considered in many aspects, from schedule, health, economy, music, image... Just to make sure: if I do it, I have to do it thoroughly. So that My Chi not only fulfills her dream of success, but when she is 30, 40 years old, she can look back and see that she had a memorable and proud youth..."
