JSOL's new album, "OE OE", is causing a stir in the BTS fan community when it was suspected of plagiarism. Many people commented that the song is 90% similar to a BTS song, making the ARMY community angry. In response to the criticism, the male singer's team spoke up.
On September 16, singer JSOL officially returned to the music scene with the mini album OE OE and the MV TÃnh Lôi. However, just a few hours after its release, the male singer's product was caught in a storm of criticism for plagiarism, when the BTS fan community (ARMY) said that TÃnh Lôi was 90% similar to Jungkook's song 3D. The incident sparked a wave of outrage, causing JSOL's crew to speak out in shock.
MV Tinh Luoi - the key product in this comeback - features rapper HurryKng and hot girl CiiN. The crew chose Singapore as the setting, including many famous landmarks such as Esplanade, East Coast Park or Clarke Quay. The MV's content depicts a youthful, modern love story, while exploiting the wordplay between laziness and love net to convey the message of pleasant laziness when falling in love.
When similarity becomes plagiarism
However, as soon as it was released, Tinh Luoi was embroiled in a plagiarism controversy. Netizens, especially the BTS fan community, pointed out that the beat of the song, composed and arranged by musician Khac Hung, had many similarities with the instrumental in Jungkook's 3D performance video. Not only that, some scenes in the MV were also compared to the 65 million view video of the youngest member of BTS.
Although many opinions refute this is only a similarity in genre and use of musical instruments, the wave of criticism for JSOL is still fierce. The controversy goes further when JSOL is the second Brother suspected of plagiarizing Jungkook. Previously, Hung Huynh had faced a storm of criticism because the MV "Can't Close Eyes" was said to be similar to "Standing Next To You". Although the two incidents are not directly related, being in the same universe of "Say Hi Brother" gives the ARMY community more reason to criticize, creating great pressure for JSOL.
The musician's confession
Faced with plagiarism suspicions, the media contacted the JSOL crew to clarify the situation. The management company DreamS said that regarding the technical aspects, musician Khac Hung will speak up to clarify.
After a period of controversy, Khac Hung gave a specific response to the above accusation of plagiarism. Accordingly, Khac Hung denied plagiarism, and at the same time provided a comparison video and a detailed article explaining the technical issues and the reasons for the similarities between the two remixes Tinh Luoi and 3D.
Khac Hung's analysis shows that Tinh Luoi and 3D have many distinct differences in the harmony, groove of the drums, bassline, main instruments, melody and lyrics. Although both have the same tempo, have a funk/hiphop vibe and use basic pop structures, these elements are very common in many songs. Tinh Luoi is built with funky guitar, synthesizers, a vibrant, urgent and playful atmosphere; while 3D creates a sexy, soaring, chill feeling thanks to E. Piano and a minimalist bassline. From there, the conclusion is that the two songs are not similar enough to consider Tinh Luoi plagiarizing 3D.
