On a stage gathering many talents from all over Asia, the appearance of Phuong My Chi with the performance "Buon Trang" became a special highlight not only because of its artistic quality but also because of its profound cultural message.
Crafted by the hands of producer group DTAP , the performance is like a journey back to the roots - where traditional values of the Vietnamese people are breathed life into the language of contemporary music.
Right from the first melodies, the audience was brought back to the quiet, poetic atmosphere of Quy Nhon land - a place associated with Han Mac Tu's poetry and Binh Dinh's opera art. Phuong My Chi sang in a musical space where traditional instruments such as the erhu and Sona were skillfully handled, harmoniously combined with modern materials to create a unique cultural exchange.
Focusing on tradition, DTAP does not choose to recreate the surface but invests in cultural depth. All the instrumental recordings were done directly in Hanoi, with the participation of real artisans to capture the "soul" of national music. Each sound is not only musical material, but also a musical note depicting the flow of culture - where music becomes a means of storytelling, carrying national memories.
The special highlight of "Buon Trang" is not only in the sound but also in the images. The final part of the performance is a combination of folk music mixed with strong rock and a performance of traditional Vovinam martial arts. This is the first time a Vietnamese artist has brought martial arts to the international stage as part of a musical performance - not simply a performance but as a declaration.
Each martial art movement is no longer a mere physical technique, but becomes a spiritual symbol: proud, indomitable, strong, yet poetic. That is how Phuong My Chi and DTAP convey the message of a Vietnam that is both profound in culture and fierce in spirit.
"Chi was really nervous, because she didn't know if everything would go smoothly when she stepped onto the stage. But when the performance was completed, and especially when she won, the biggest feeling was pride - not only for herself but also for the whole crew. We told a Vietnamese story very carefully and it was recognized by international friends," Phuong My Chi shared.
Behind the impressive performance are a series of emotional backstage details. The conical hat quai thao was so treasured that she did not want to put it down during the rehearsal â a small act but showing the spirit of preserving heritage. 20 hand-painted conical hats, each a unique diplomatic gift with the national flag and Chiâs portrait, were prepared by her own hands as gifts to international friends. Even the martial arts choreography was almost changed at the last minute due to risks in the acrobatic movements â but with determination and quick support from the martial arts teacher, everything was replaced and quickly rehearsed to be brought to the stage in time.
A mino.r leg injury after the final round left Phuong My Chi scratched, but she only realized it when she retreated backstage. "I was so happy I forgot the pai.n," she laughed. That is the joy of an artist when she sees her passion and the story she brings being listened to by an international audience.
There is a clear consistency in every musical journey that DTAP and Phuong My Chi have been on: Vietnamese culture does not need to be shouted out loud, but needs to be told in an authentic and emotional way. Understanding national culture â from folk songs, melodies, musical instruments, martial arts to the way of looking at the past â is the factor that helps them position themselves in the flow of modern music.
From the image of a moon boat drifting through memories, to the melody that blends folk and rock, the performance "Buon Trang" is proof that tradition and modernity can absolutely go hand in hand. When young people know how to appreciate and deeply understand their culture, they not only bring the best things far away, but also help the world understand more about a Vietnam that is profound, diverse and constantly moving.
"Buon Trang" is not simply a performance. It is an artistic manifesto, a journey to bring the Vietnamese cultural identity to the world with all understanding, respect and creativity. There, Phuong My Chi is not only a singer, but also a storyteller. As for DTAP, they are not only musicians, but also people who preserve culture in the language of the times.
"This is not just a musical performance, but a cultural story. We want every breath of Vietnamese history to resound on the international stage" - DTAP representative shared.
