With a revenue of 26 billion VND as of the morning of December 23, Sister-in-law surpassed Disney's blockbuster Mufasa: The Lion King (12.5 billion VND) and Korea's Love Without Words (193 million VND) when all 3 films were released on December 20.
Accordingly, the movie Chi dau (Real sisters) directed by Khuong Ngoc and starring Viet Huong is a phenomenon at the Vietnamese box office when receiving many positive responses and reviews in many aspects. After three days of official release nationwide, the movie earned 26 billion VND (reference data from Box Office Vietnam, as of the morning of December 23), topping the Vietnamese box office revenue last weekend.
On the other hand, many opinions say that the revenue of 26 billion VND is not worthy of the "ability" of director Khuong Ngoc's new work. From the script, acting, setting and settings, Sister-in-law brings an attractive story, emotions mixed with surprises. On social networks, the movie's keywords as well as the roles of Viet Huong, Hong Dao, Le Khanh, Dinh Y Nhung and Ngoc Trinh are discussed densely.
However, not only discussing the plot and acting, but the audience also enthusiastically "secretly filmed" excerpts in theaters to post on the first day of Sister-in-law's release. More notably, the clips secretly filmed of Anh (Dinh Y Nhung) publicly coming out as LGBT, Thu (Le Khanh) talking to Ba Ky's daughter (Hong Dao), Hai Nhi (Viet Huong) being isolated by her brother-in-law... were released and received great attention, attracting millions of views and spreading massively.
Secretly filming and distributing movies is a problem that always gives film producers and distributors a headache and a tough stance. After strict sanctions were applied, the situation of secret filming has decreased, but recently it has suddenly become active again. Many netizens have also spoken out against the accounts filming and distributing the movie Sister-in-law as illegal and uncivilized. However, the Sister-in-law crew has not yet responded to this incident.
Responding to the media, director Khuong Ngoc said he tried to balance his artistic ego and entertainment, bringing a more touching theatrical work, but at the same time also inserting the "black comedy" element that is his forte.
Sister-in-law revolves around Kieu Nhi (Viet Huong), the owner of a gold shop, who is also the protector of her four sisters-in-law and manages important family matters after her husband passed away. During the memorial service that gathered all the neighbors, Mrs. Nhi announced that she would spend money to renovate the family's ancestral house. This goes against the views of her four sisters, causing many conflicts between them and dark secrets to gradually be revealed.
Right from the beginning of the film, Khuong Ngoc spends time introducing each member of the all-female family, with separate stories. In the eyes of her younger sisters, Mrs. Hai Nhi is a "stranger" but likes to show off her power, is dictatorial, and often "harasses" others. In reality, the character often silently helps, finds ways to protect her younger siblings, and maintains harmony in the family. The third aunt Ky (Hong Dao) is a plastic surgeon with a vicious view of men, is an alcoholic, and is always the instigator of quarrels with her sister-in-law. The fourth aunt Thu (Le Khanh) is an accountant with a temperament that goes with the flow. Anh (Dinh Y Nhung) has a taciturn personality and has no say in the family, while the youngest aunt Nhu (Ngoc Trinh) is dependent on her sister-in-law due to her heavy debt.
In order to push the conflict to a climax, the script of Sister-in-law invests heavily in satirical and critical dialogue. Each sister-in-law considers herself the victim, but unintentionally or intentionally hurts others because of her own hidden feelings. Viewers are put in Mrs. Nhi's perspective, from there seeing the whole picture, both chaotic but also very real, easily found in many Vietnamese families with many children.
Hong Dao revealed Ngoc Trinh's secret, affirmed 1 thing, and even shouted Viet Huong's name Tuyết Ngọc14:41:16 15/02/2025Hong Dao had the opportunity to interact with Ngoc Trinh more, as well as understand her junior's true personality when they participated in the film Chi Dau. She just had some interesting shares.
