The Lunar New Year 2026 film market is heating up as various film projects announce their release dates. In particular, a film exploring the story of Chu Dong Tu and Tien Dung has just confirmed its entry into the race.
After Tran Thanh's "Rabbit, Oh My!" confirmed its participation in the most exciting film season of the year, recently, director Ton Van's "Mysterious Night Love" also officially joined the race, creating a noteworthy "two-horse" competition right from the start.
According to the announced plan, "Rabbit, Oh!" will officially premiere on the first day of the Lunar New Year, February 17, 2026. This is considered a project marking a new step for Tran Thanh after a series of Lunar New Year films that grossed hundreds of billions of VND in recent years. Unlike his previous works which focused on family comedy, "Rabbit, Oh!" is presented with a more youthful tone, combining psychological, dramatic, and entertainment elements, targeting a younger audience – a demographic increasingly dominant in movie theaters.
Another noteworthy aspect of "Rabbit, Oh My!" is its diverse cast, bringing together many faces from various fields. Besides Tran Thanh himself, the film features LyLy, Phap Kieu, Gil Le, Cris Phan, Ali Hoang Duong, BB Tran, Dinh Ngoc Diep, and more. The selection of artists from music, entertainment, and digital content platforms demonstrates the production team's clear strategy of reaching a younger audience. This is also a group that tends to watch films based on social media virality, a factor Tran Thanh has successfully exploited in his previous projects.
Meanwhile, "Huyen Tinh Da Trach" (Night Love Story) is taking a different approach, planning an earlier release date of February 10, 2026 (the 23rd day of the 12th lunar month). Produced by Hanoi Television and directed by Ton Van, the film is inspired by the legend of Chu Dong Tu and Tien Dung, one of the familiar folk tales of Vietnamese culture. Releasing the film before the peak Tet holiday season is considered a shrewd strategy, giving it more time to reach audiences and generate word-of-mouth before directly competing with films released on the first day of Tet.
In terms of style, the two films show quite distinct contrasts. "Rabbit, Oh!" represents the modern genre, exploring contemporary psychological and emotional issues – a theme that is Tran Thanh's "trademark." His previous works often touched upon family life, social relationships, and hidden emotional aspects, easily creating empathy with a wide audience. Conversely, "Mysterious Night Love" focuses on an ancient setting, recreating a historical and religious context with a slow-paced narrative, rich symbolism, and strong cultural nuances.
The cast of "Huyen Tinh Da Trach" also clearly reflects this direction. The film brings together many veteran artists such as People's Artist Trong Trinh, Meritorious Artist Nguyen Chieu Xuan, People's Artist Bui Bai Binh, Meritorious Artist Van Bau, along with young actors. The combination of seasoned acting experience and youthful energy is expected to help the work maintain both the depth of its content and create a fresh approach to its presentation.
The inclusion of "Thỏ Ơi!" and " Huyền Tình Dạ Trạch " in the 2026 Lunar New Year film season shows that the film landscape at the beginning of the year is becoming more diverse in terms of genre and target audience. While Tran Thanh's film continues to target the masses, especially young audiences who enjoy modern, emotionally rich stories, director Ton Van's project offers a different option for those interested in historical and cultural elements and traditional depth.
