In early 2026, the film "Blood Paradise" officially surpassed 108 billion VND in revenue, becoming a notable highlight of the Vietnamese box office right from the beginning of the year. This is the first "shot" for more than 70 other films that will be released this year.
Following the success of "Blood Paradise," the Vietnamese box office is preparing for a fierce competition with a series of Lunar New Year films from many familiar names such as Tran Thanh, Truong Giang, Le Thanh Son, and Minh Beta. Notable titles include "My Child Tells Me," "Thank You for Staying Up with Me," "Possessed by the Corpse 2," "Talent," "Hero," "Blood Moon Feast 8," "Madames Thanh Sac," "Guardian of the Spirits," "Detective Kien 2,"... creating a rich "picture" for the first half of 2026.
Lessons learned from 2025 show that the April 30th holiday is gradually becoming seen as "a new Tet season" for Vietnamese cinema, with the extended holiday and increased demand for entertainment. In addition, the period immediately following the Lunar New Year is also considered quite "popular". Therefore, 2026 will witness a massive influx of domestic films from the early months of the year, signaling fiercer competition than ever before.
Opening this film series is "My Son Tells His Father," which officially premiered on January 16th. To date, the film has reached the top spot in daily box office revenue, surpassing "Blood Paradise." Directed by Do Quoc Trung and with Tran Thanh Huy as creative director, the film tells a touching story about the healing journey between Mr. Thai (Kieu Minh Tuan), a tightrope walker and single father, and his sensitive teenage son, played by Hao Khang.
During the Lunar New Year holiday, four films have announced their release dates: "Thỏ ơi" (Oh, Little Rabbit) starring Tran Thanh, "Nhà ba tôi một phòng" (My Father's House Has One Room) starring Truong Giang, "Báu vật trời cho" (Heaven's Gift Treasure) starring Le Thanh Son, and "Mùi phở" (The Scent of Pho) starring Minh Beta. All are scheduled to be released on the first day of the Lunar New Year. Among these, the initial advantage leans towards Tran Thanh and Truong Giang due to their strong brand recognition with the general audience. Notably, this is the first time these two "box office kings" will directly compete during the Lunar New Year film season, promising a fierce race. However, the remaining projects still have the potential to surprise if they possess sufficient quality.
Besides the four films mentioned above, there are still several projects scheduled for release during the Lunar New Year holiday but whose release dates for the first day of the new year have not yet been finalized. These films are expected to be announced soon, further enlivening the market.
Following the Lunar New Year, "Thank You for Staying Up with Me," directed by Chung Chi Cong and scheduled for release on February 27th, tells the story of young people pursuing their dreams. The film revolves around Khang (Nguyen Hung), an amateur aspiring to become a director; Hoai (Vo Phan Kim Khanh), who longs to be an actor; and Hieu (Doan Hoang), a talented but unsuccessful comic book artist. Filming took place not only in Vietnam but also in New York (USA) and Busan (South Korea), demonstrating the serious investment of the production team.
Next, "Possessed 2," scheduled for release on March 6th, is expected to continue the success of the first part, which grossed 149 billion VND. The film brings back Kha Nhu and Quang Tuan, and also features the new addition of Doan Quoc Dam, set in a mysterious dyeing factory, directed by Pom Nguyen.
Meanwhile, "Tai" - a project produced by My Tam and directed by Mai Tai Phen - has not yet announced its official release date, but it is likely to launch in March. This is the first time the two have collaborated on a film project in a larger role, with Mai Tai Phen both writing the screenplay and playing the male lead.
For the April 30th holiday, two notable films are "Anh Hung" (Hero), scheduled for release on April 24th, and "Dai Tiec Trang Mau 8" (Blood Moon Party 8), which has no release date yet. "Anh Hung" stars Thai Hoa and Hong Anh, is directed by Vo Thach Thao, and produced by Timothy Linh Bui. Meanwhile, "Dai Tiec Trang Mau 8," directed by Phan Gia Nhat Linh and produced by Charlie Nguyen, boasts a large cast including Hong Anh, Hua Vi Van, Miu Le, Lien Binh Phat, and comedian Van Son, promising to continue stirring up the box office.
The 2026 Tran Thanh Tet movie lost the male lead, can the cast of Say Brother be affected?
