Fluent in 3 foreign languages, Phan Thi Thao (born 2001, from Dak Lak) once had the opportunity to work in Ho Chi Minh City with a dream income. But instead of choosing a life in the city, she decided to return to her hometown to help the poor.
Interpreter overcomes difficulties and the journey back
Growing up in a poor farming family, Thao was a skinny student who had to go to school in the rain and did not have the opportunity to learn English like her friends. When Thao was 15, her father suddenly fell seriously ill, causing her education to almost come to an end.
However, the father still held the young girlâs hand and insisted that she go to university. According to him, because he did not finish high school, he had almost lost all opportunities to change his familyâs life. Therefore, only going to school could help his daughter find success.
By self-studying with old books, she was admitted to the English language department at a university in Ho Chi Minh City and then gradually became a professional interpreter, being able to fluently use three foreign languages: English, Japanese and Chinese.
During her four years at university, Thao studied and worked at the same time. She only slept three hours a day to participate in online translation for foreign partners, cabin translation and tutoring... just to have enough to pay tuition and send mone.y back to support her family.

After graduating, Thao received many stable job offers in Ho Chi Minh City. In particular, with her ability to communicate fluently in multiple languages, Thao was often assigned the role of cabin interpreter - live interpreter, for conferences with international experts. However, instead of choosing to stay in the city, she withdrew from all work groups, packed her bags and returned to her hometown.
"Returning to my hometown is not because I ran out of options. I chose to live near my parents and do something for the children here - the children who are growing up in the same circumstances I experienced," Thao said.
Journey to help the poor
Since the end of 2023, Thao has used her TikTok channel to share about life in the countryside. Moments about children in difficult mountainous areas quickly touched the emotions of many people, and Thao organized charity events and free kitchens.
"Now I feel like I can be myself. I grew up poor and understand that feeling, so I want the children in the future to have a better future," Thao said.

In addition to organizing charity trips for children in her hometown, Thao also took part in taking care of orphans at the pagoda, the elderly at the nursing home... Her good journey received a lot of love from everyone. Every time she livestreamed, she often gently called out: "Whoever has old clothes, please send a little love to the children in my hometown". In just a short time, the clothes were sent to the village.
She spreads love to poor children
The young gir.l couldn't remember how many times she was moved when the children in the mountainous region saw the dress for the first time and tried it on, or the old man was moved because at the time he was near deat.h he finally got to eat curry...

"Those loving moments help me have more faith in my journey. I hope to have more opportunities to help people in my hometown," the young gir.l said.
In addition to her direct teaching time, she still takes on translation work, teaches English online, and occasionally does livestreams to share learning and life skills. "These jobs are enough to help me take care of myself and maintain the class. I'm not rich, but I have enough to share with everyone around me," Thao shared.
The young gir.l hopes that poor children will have a better future.
Without flashy success and many assets, Thao still diligently works on her small stories in her hometown of Dak Lak. Because for the young gir.l, that job is her way to repay a beautiful thing that life has silently sent her: the opportunity to learn and rise up.
