Musician Duc Huy is known as one of the typical young singer/songwriters of Saigon village before 1975. Overseas, he is better known as a musician. He is now living a fulfilling life with his wife of 44 years.
Some of his songs have become famous in Vietnam, and overseas, such as: The Centennial Lover, As Beloved, Weep a River, and the Heart Is Happy Again, And I Love You Too, Love You Long, Prison Heart,... Before 1975, he also had a few famous compositions such as Drizzle, Flying Away Seabirds.
Musician Duc Huy, whose real name is Dang Duc Huy, was born on June 10, 1947 in Nam Dinh, originally from Shanxi. As a child, he lived in Hanoi before emigrating with his family in 1954. He and his parents traveled extensively, from Da Nang, Da Lat, through Nha Trang, finally settling in Saigon.
The musician has a famous musician cousin, Nguyen Vu, and it was this brother who encouraged him to follow the path of art. Many times sharing with the press, Duc Huy said that since childhood he has had a strong passion for music, especially he likes to listen to cheerful and bustling melodies.
At that time, Duc Huy often listened to the music of Van Phung and Doan Chuan, and the conductor of musician Tran Thien Thanh. He also listened to foreign music by Elvis Presley, the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, etc. through records, radios to "train the ears".
In 1963, when he was still a high school boy, Duc Huy was invited by the youth band - Les Vampires to join as a musician. After graduating from High School, he entered the University of Arts. As a student, he participated in many youth bands such as Crazy Boys, Revolution, The Top Five, especially the Strawberry Four (with Tuan Ngoc, Tung Giang and Bille Shane) following the model of the world-famous band - Beatles. 4 young men played the genre of music together - folk rock.
However, this cult group quickly disbanded after 1 period of activity. Musician Duc Huy once shared that the band members are all talented, but have big egos, so they had to say goodbye to each other.
Continuing to pursue his career, Duc Huy collaborated with Doan Thanh Tuyen to become a famous young music duo. Previously, the musician met Doan Thanh Tuyen when she went to sing in the Blue Stars band at the Tu Do Teahouse. It is known that Doan Thanh Tuyen is the younger brother of Doan Thanh Van (wife of musician Ngo Thuy Mien) and also the son of actor Doan Chau Mau.
Also during this time, Duc Huy began his songwriting career, his debut song titled "Crying Ha" - composed in 1967, but not released. Two years later (in 1969), he released "Drizzle".
Graduating from the University of Arts and Sciences in 1972, he received a mobilization order for enlistment. Despite his university degree and good English skills, he did not choose to continue his officer education and became a local private. During his military service, he continued to compose and perform.
In the last days of April 1975, musician Duc Huy lost his family, and he took refuge in the Philippines for a while. Due to his good foreign language skills, he participated in an organization that helps refugees here.
Recommended by an American friend who is a reporter, he accepted a job as a caregiver for 2 Amerasian children (only 7 months old) in exchange for the opportunity to leave the camp early - to San Francisco, USA.
He successfully reached faraway America with only $30 in his pocket. His first livelihood job was serving in a Vietnamese restaurant. After a while, thanks to his reputation as a musician, he was introduced to the San Francisco music scene, singing while playing for a foreign band in Hollyday.
In 1983, musician Duc Huy lived in Hawaii because he loved the climate here. There he sang at 1 bar in Honolulu. The following time he sang on yachts, began a life at sea - traveling throughout Tahiti, the Caribbean, Jamaica, Mexico for 4-5 years.
In 1989, he and singer Thao My married and settled in California. To earn a living, he apprenticed to photography but left after only 1 year. Duc Huy then returned to performing with his wife. Duc Huy's song associated with Thao My's name is "Don't Leave Me Tonight". They continued to perform together, however, after 13 years of marriage, musician Duc Huy and singer Thao My decided to "go together".
Since 2004, Duc Huy has returned to Vietnam many times to perform, appear in many music shows and serve as a judge at game shows. These can be mentioned as: Universal Dance and Familiar Face. In 2005, Duc Huy made the album And the Heart Back in Vietnam and held his own live show of the same name in 2007.
He has now settled permanently in Vietnam, remarrying in 2013 to a 44-year-old girl who is his fan. The couple had a son (born in 2015) and a daughter (born in 2018).
Currently, even at the age of 76, musician Duc Huy is still working hard to perform and is not afraid to reinvent himself. The musician said he rarely thinks about his age. "If you can breathe, you can still stand, you can play, you can still sing, just do those things, why think too much" - musician Duc Huy shared.
He added that his number one priority has always been stable health. Simply, if he is not well, everyone around him is "tired" because of him. The musician revealed that he cares and pays attention to the well-being of everyone around him, especially his family members. With good health, he can take care of his family.
Revealing the secret to keeping marriage alive, the musician said he often says that we don't need to wait until March 8 to show love and affection and express gratitude to the women who understand, love and make this life full and beautiful every day. Since life is not local, we all need interaction and always need each other.
He confided: "In life, first of all, there must be complete love for each other. Maybe it's because of our mutual understanding and appreciation that my wife and I don't have a problem with separation, when one says the other listens. We don't speak at the same time. If there is anything in the house, the person who can do it should do it, do not compare the work of one person and the other, give each other friendly glances and words instead of scrutinizing the weaknesses of the other, and know not to say anything when you need to be silent so that the situation is stabilized quickly. Honestly, I can't remember the last time we argued and got mad at each other for more than half a day."
