Despite being involved in a lot of noise, NewJeans' appeal has not diminished. The proof is that the group has topped the "Singer of the Year" poll conducted by Gallup Korea for the second consecutive year.
Research firm Gallup Korea conducted a survey in 2024, lasting from July to November, asking 5,281 individuals aged 13 and over across South Korea (excluding Jeju Island) to name up to three of their favorite singers or groups active in the Korean popular music scene, to compile the "Singer of the Year" ranking.
The results showed that among the under-40 group (13-39 years old), NewJeans ranked first with 25.5% support. This is the second consecutive year that 5 female idols have dominated this survey category. Previously, they had a remarkable rise from 5th place in their debut year (2022) to first place in 2023.
Even amid the controversy surrounding their management company (which erupted in April), NewJeans is still recognized as the top choice of 2024. In addition, the group also showed strong appeal when surpassing long-time favorites.
In second place among singers voted by people under 40 is IU (20.6% of the votes). Debuting in 2008, IU is a singer-songwriter and is also famous as an actress in hit dramas and movies.
She has consistently ranked high in the "Singer of the Year" categories since 2011, including first place in 2014 and 2017. This year, the female artist successfully concluded a world tour with 31 performances in 12 countries, attracting 500,000 audiences. However, she still had to admit defeat to her junior.
Third place went to aespa, a four-member gir.l group (Karina, Winter, Giselle, and NingNing) who debuted in 2020, with 13.3% of the votes. Fourth place went to BTS (10.7%) - a bo.y group that promises to return as a full 7-member group in 2025, after completing their military service.
Fifth place on the chart is IVE (10.2%), while DAY6 (8.5%) is in 6th place. Notably, BLACKPINK "landed" modestly in 7th place with 8.0% and Rosé (7.7%) in 8th place. Then there is Lim Young Woong (5.4%) in 9th place, while Lee Mu Jin (3.9%) is in 10th place.
Among those aged 40 and over, trot singer Lim Young Woong topped the list with 33.9% support. This is the fifth consecutive year he has topped this category, so the result is not too surprising to fans.
Returning to NewJeans, according to Allkpop, on December 22, the group members sent a few words to fans on their new social media account - jeanzforfree. In particular, Minji's message attracted attention with the content: "Thank you so much Bunnies for cheering and staying with us until the end, even though today's recording was quite long and the weather was very cold.
Performances with Bunnies are always memorable, but today felt like something special that I will remember forever. I am always grateful to Bunnies. You are all so cute and warm." In addition, the female idol also wrote the words "I will cry after feeling more comfortable" in a difficult-to-see location, but fans still quickly discovered this.
That day, NewJeans participated in the pre-recording for MBC's 2024 year-end music festival "Gayo Daejejeon". According to fans who attended the event, some members, typically Hanni, shed tears after completing their stage. This move immediately attracted attention, because they are embroiled in a contract dispute with ADOR Company (part of HYBE Group).
