Girl group NewJeans has just been honored as the most influential Kpop group in the global entertainment industry. Notably, these 5 girls are the only Kpop girl group to be named, surpassing a series of other names, including BabyMonster.
Recently, Variety magazine announced the Young Hollywood Impact Report 2024 list, honoring influential young artists in the global entertainment industry in many fields of music, film, television, theater... The group NewJeans (Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, Hyein) is the only female Kpop artist included in the list (along with the boy band Ateez).
The magazine praised NewJeans for achieving record-breaking streaming numbers on Spotify, as well as the group's achievements on the Billboard charts. At the same time, the magazine noted NewJeans' global brand partnerships with major companies such as Coca-Cola, Apple, and more.
"Since their debut in July 2022, NewJeans - the K-pop group consisting of members Minji (20), Hanni (19), Danielle (19), Haerin (18) and Hyein (16) - has charted on the Billboard Global 200 for 37 consecutive weeks (the longest streak among female K-pop artists), achieved more than 4.3 billion streams and has branded partnerships with Coca-Cola, Apple, Levi's" - Variety introduced NewJeans.
The magazine also noted that NewJeans "is planning a grand world tour in 2025." According to JoongAng Daily, NewJeans has been actively promoting its music for the past two years and will officially debut in the Japanese market in the summer of 2023.
The group's Korean single "How Sweet" and Japanese debut single "Supernatural" took music charts both domestically and internationally by storm. Both releases sold over 1 million copies, bringing NewJeans to a total of 5 million album sales to date.
NewJeans performed to 91,000 people in two shows at the Tokyo Dome in June. The girl group was recently nominated for Best K-pop Song at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards for "Super Shy" from their 2023 EP "Get Up." Earlier in February, NewJeans was named Group of the Year at Billboard's Women in Music 2024.
In early August, NewJeans also made a splash when they surpassed their senior BTS on the Melon chart. Melon is the most popular and widely used online music platform in Korea. The Melon chart is considered a tool to reflect popular music trends in Korea. The success and popularity of a song is often measured by its appearance on this chart.
The fact that a song stays at the top spot on Melon for many weeks also proves the appeal of that group. According to All Kpop, up to now, the song "Ditto" by the group NewJeans is the song that has stayed on the Melon chart for 14 weeks at the top spot.
The song is considered a super hit by NewJeans members in 2022 with a cheerful melody that is typical of the group. This is also the Kpop song that has held the top 1 spot on Melon for the longest time ever. In addition to "Ditto", NewJeans' song "Super Shy" has also held the top 1 spot on NewJeans for 7 consecutive weeks.
The next song to stay on Melon for a long time is BTS's "Dynamite" with 11 weeks at the top spot. Released in 2020, "Dynamite" immediately took the world by storm and quickly became BTS's global hit.
Recently, NewJeans has also been involved in a scandal with HYBE Group, CEO Min Hee Jin - the group's creator. In May 2024, all five members of the group, Daniel, Minzy, Hani, Hae Rin and Hye In, filed a lawsuit (petition) with the court in the context that CEO Min Hee Jin was filing a lawsuit against HYBE. This female CEO also asked the court to prohibit HYBE Group from exercising voting rights at the shareholders' meeting at the end of May (in order to fire her).
