"Linh Miao" - When folk legends are "transformed", Thuy Tien is the bright spot?

Linh Miao: The Devil Enters Trang is a film released on November 22 that made a big splash and topped the Vietnamese box office. Although the film has bright spots in terms of setting, acting, and message, it also has limitations in terms of technique and story development.

The plot of "Linh Mieu" focuses on three women in the Duong Phuc family: Mae Bich, My Kim, and Phuong. Each of them has their own desires, ambitions, and difficulties. Their story clearly reflects the injustice and social problems of women's status in the feudal context. The film cleverly inserts messages about cause and effect, superstition, and especially the respect for men and women that still exist in society.

The film is set in Hue in the 1960s, revolving around the wealthy and powerful Duong Phuc family with traditional crockery mosaics. The scenes were taken in a 150-year-old old villa, which has been very elaborately restored, cleverly retaining the typical architectural spirit of Hue.

The meticulousness in choosing clothes also contributes to highlighting the social classes in the family, from the powerful character Mi Bich (Hong Dao) to the maid Phuong (Thuy Tien). This creates a space that is both luxurious and gloomy, suitable for the mysterious elements of the story.

Despite being meticulously invested in the setting and costumes, "Linh Mieu" still has many limitations in terms of technique. Images of monsters and beasts, such as black cats or ghostly phenomena that look fake and unconvincing, make some scenes in the film easy to make the audience laugh instead of creepy. This is a problem that director Vo Thanh Hoa also encountered in "Demon Crane", and despite trying to overcome it, the scary elements in "Linh Miao" still lack the necessary sharpness.

Acting is one of the bright spots of "Linh Mieu", especially the performance of artist Hong Dao as Mrs. Bich. With a powerful demeanor, Mother Bich is not only the head of the family but also a character with a complex and changeable psychology. Hong Dao has succeeded in conveying this contradiction through her eyes, intonation and body language. Thien An as My Kim also has an impressive performance with two perfectly opposite personality traits: gentle in the family and ruthless in business.

Miss Thuy Tien, as Phuong, also did quite well in her debut role. Although her acting is sometimes unnatural and short of breath compared to her experienced colleagues, Thuy Tien has shown her efforts in building a character with a complex personality that is not easy to predict.

Although the beginning of the film impressed with the construction of the setting and the introduction of the characters, the script of "Linh Miao" gradually became lengthy and confusing. Some episodes are somewhat unreasonable, such as the characters in danger taking the time to confess their feelings to each other, causing a feeling of wetness and reducing the tension of the story. These situations can disrupt the pace of the film and make it difficult for the audience to follow.

The dubbing with a Hue accent also creates a new feeling, but it has some problems such as mismatch of mouth shape and sometimes switching to a common voice, making it easy for viewers to recognize the lack of synchronization.

"Linh Miao: The Demon Enters the Colon" brings a story worth pondering about the status of women in feudal society, but there are still many limitations.

Although the setting, costumes, and acting of the cast all have commendable points, the technique is still unconvincing and the script is still not perfect. However, with strengths such as causal messages and unique cultural elements, "Linh Mieu" still deserves attention and is a step forward in the universe of folk spirits of Vietnamese cinema.
