Right from the first early screenings, the Vietnamese-Korean film "Bring my mother away" has created an incredible box office phenomenon, not only because of the impressive sales figures but also thanks to the emotional message.
Without waiting for the official premiere date (August 1), "Bring your mother away" began to sweep the Vietnamese box office from the evening of July 30-31 through early screenings. In less than 12 hours, the film earned about 22 billion VND, surpassing the Japanese animated blockbuster Conan Movie 28, and quickly rose to the top of the box office charts.
Specifically, the first early screening date helped the film earn more than 13.8 billion VND, most of which came from the number of tickets booked in advance. On the next day, the number continued to increase, bringing the total revenue to VND 26 billion after just over 2 days of early screening and official premiere. This is an extremely impressive achievement for a Vietnamese-Korean cooperation film, and a clear testament to the attraction of emotional content, as well as the effectiveness of the methodical media campaign.
It is worth noting that, despite being released at the same time as many popular foreign films, "Bring your mother away" still retains the Top 1 position at the box office for many days in a row. This initial success is not only a victory in terms of sales, but also a positive signal for the serious and humane Vietnamese film series.
"Take your mother away" tells the story of Mrs. Hanh (People's Artist Hong Dao) â an elderly mother with Alzheimer's, living with her son Hoan (Tuan Tran) â a small barber, who travels every day on a tricycle to earn a living and take care of her mother. Hoan herself also carries epilepsy, but always silently bears the burden so that her mother can live the last days of her life in a kind way.
When she felt her health declining rapidly, Hoan decided to take her mother to Korea to find her half-brother â with the desire to find her mother a place to shelter for the end of her life. That trip, seemingly simple, became a journey filled with love, torment, tears and forgiveness.
The strength of the film is the way to exploit the theme of close family but not cliché. The film does not have a heavy philosophy, does not force the viewer to cry, but every scene from the mother's distraught gaze, to the quiet endurance of the child is enough to make the audience's heart tighten. Many people shed tears when witnessing the segments where Hoan hid her illness, pretending to be happy to reassure her mother. Those little things are the material that makes the film live forever in the hearts of viewers.
It is undeniable that one of the factors that helped "Bring your mother away" to create a fever is the smart communication strategy and attractive cast. The presence of Korean actor Jung Il-woo in the film not only attracted the attention of international fans, but also helped the film expand its coverage on social media platforms. Jung Il-woo has also participated in cinetours, fan meeting events in Vietnam, and many times emotionally shared that he "cried 5 times when watching the final version of the movie".
Meanwhile, People's Artist Hong Dao and Tuan Tran â the two main actors â are considered to have completely transformed into the character. Without acting outrageously, without falling into tragedy, the two show their inner depth through their eyes, gestures and meaningful silence. This is an important factor that makes it easy for viewers to empathize and connect with the character.
Not only stopping at a movie to cry, "Take your mother away" is also a gentle reminder of friendship, duty and responsibility to the person who gave birth and raised us. The film raises profound questions: When our parents are old and weak, what do we do? When time is running out, will we be tolerant enough to forgive and love?
Although highly appreciated, the film still received some mixed opinions. Some viewers think that the transition to Korea at the end is not really coherent, making the emotional circuit sometimes slow. However, most viewers agree that these minor limitations do not affect the strong message and genuine emotions that the film brings.
