On the occasion of the April 30 holiday this year, the Vietnamese film market is witnessing a remarkable fluctuation when two names that were once considered box office "guarantees", directors Ly Hai and Victor Vu, were not present.
For many years, Ly Hai has been almost a familiar face of the 30/4 film season with a series of works under the Flip Face brand. However, after the 8th part achieved revenue of more than 231 billion VND – a figure lower than expectations compared to the previous series of achievements – this director did not continue to launch new projects during this year's holidays. This surprised the audience, because in the past, Ly Hai's appearance often created a clear competitive position on the box office charts.
Similarly, Victor Vu – who once made a strong impression with Detective Kien reaching more than 248 billion VND – also did not choose the time of April 30 to launch the sequel as predicted. The fact that both directors were able to "rule" the box office withdrew together has opened up a whole new competition. Instead of a track led by heavyweight candidates, this year's market witnessed the simultaneous appearance of many projects diverse in genres.
Prominent among these is Hero by director Vo Thach Thao, with the participation of Thai Hoa. The film explores topical topics around charity scams, telling the story of a taxi driver who is caught up in the spiral of money and public opinion. The social approach is considered suitable for the current audience trend, when stories close to life are receiving a lot of attention.
In another direction, Blood Moon Party 8 attracts attention thanks to the bold staging idea with a long camera shot and a combination of humor and behind-the-scenes cinematic setting. The project gathers many familiar faces, aimed at the audience who love new storytelling styles. This is considered a different choice in the context that the market is in need of creative elements to attract viewers.
Meanwhile, the horror film series continues to appear with two representatives, Pig Nam Ho and Phi Phong: The Blood Devil of the Sacred Forest. Both exploit folk materials with mystical legends, sacred forest elements and mysterious colors. However, the horror genre has recently shown signs of cooling down at the box office, making the revenue results of these projects still unknown.
Besides, director Duc Thinh's Boss of Oysters offers a lighter choice. The work revolves around the journey of a wealthy character to trace the stolen assets, combining folk comedy elements and familiar life messages. This is considered a film line that is easily accessible to the masses during the holidays.
The diversity of genres shows the efforts of producers to refresh the market after the Tet film season. From drama, comedy to horror, each project is aimed at its own audience. In the context of the absence of familiar big brands, this year's track is expected to be more balanced, when each work has the opportunity to show its own strengths.
The gap left by Ly Hai and Victor Vu inadvertently became an opportunity for other projects to break through. When there is no longer a clear "leader", the market may witness a stronger differentiation of tastes. Films with good content, effective promotion strategies, or positive feedback from the audience can completely rise to the top.
Rumors are circulating that Vinh Dam will replace Vo Dien Gia Huy in Victor Vu's Detective Kien 2?
