Actress Ngoc Thuy has given a frank response to the wave of debate surrounding the kneeling and begging scene and the controversial way of addressing people in the film "Stepping into Life".
The prime-time drama "Stepping into Life" is becoming the focus of public attention, but not because of romantic plotlines, but because of scenes that have sparked intense controversy. In particular, the scene where the character Trang (Ngọc Thủy) kneels at Lâm's (Mạnh Trường) feet to beg him to return to the interview has generated a strong wave of protest from viewers.
On film forums, many people argue that this situation is over-the-top and unrealistic. In the context of modern society, a young woman having to humble herself to the point of kneeling because of a work-related issue is considered an "exaggeration," even a "loss of shame." Viewers question: Where is the character's self-respect when faced with ordinary work pressures?
Following strong reactions, actress Ngoc Thuy officially spoke out, sharing her experience and personal views on the character Trang. She admitted that she had to think and struggle mentally a lot before filming this scene because she anticipated its sensitive nature.
"I thought a lot before filming because this scene could easily be perceived as 'overdone'. However, I see it as a 'psychological breaking point' when a person is pushed to the limit of pressure," Ngoc Thuy revealed.
The actress explained that Trang's act of kneeling did not represent weakness or cowardice. Instead, it reflected a temporary loss of control. When honor, career, and expectations are seriously threatened, an individual may engage in actions they themselves would never have anticipated. For Ngoc Thuy, it was a realistic portrayal of the predicament young people face in the whirlwind of making a living and fulfilling responsibilities.
Besides the kneeling scene, "Stepping into Life" also faced criticism for its dialogue. Despite being sisters and only 5-6 years apart in age, Trang (Ngoc Thuy) and Minh (Son Tung) frequently addressed each other using informal and disrespectful pronouns like "I" and "you" (in a derogatory way).
This came as a shock to many viewers, especially since the family in the film was portrayed as having a good educational background, with the eldest sister being a literature teacher. Many opinions suggest that this form of address goes against Vietnamese customs and family norms. It lacks educational value for young viewers, especially since the film airs during prime time nationwide. It creates a sense of vulgarity and diminishes the sacred value of the bond between sisters.
In contrast to the criticisms, Ngoc Thuy has a more open-minded perspective. She believes this is the screenwriter's intention to portray the individuality and the straightforward, unbiased relationship between the two characters.
"In Vietnamese, the informal pronouns 'tao' and 'may' (you/me) sometimes express extreme closeness. It helps to break down rigid distances, creating the feeling that the two sisters are like childhood friends, ready to confront each other but also very close," she explained. The actress affirmed that this is a way to bring "real life" into the film, instead of sticking to standard dialogue that is sometimes considered "textbook" and dry.
The controversy surrounding "Stepping into Life" has once again raised alarm bells about the role of film in shaping social language and behavior. While it's true that art should reflect reality, how should that reality be filtered so that it doesn't become harmful?
Many viewers worry that the overuse of dramatic scenes or excessively vulgar language will cause television dramas to lose their inherent humanistic value. Chasing ratings by pushing characters into extreme situations can sometimes backfire, leaving viewers feeling tired and annoyed instead of empathetic.
