In the Netflix hit drama When Life Gives You Tangerines, Park Bo Gum plays the young Yang Gwan Sik - a simple man who lives sincerely and loves wholeheartedly on Jeju Island in the 1960s.
As the story spans four acts, across time and generations, the character Gwan Sik leaves an impression on the audience with his sincerity and depth, especially through Park Bo Gum's subtle performance.
In a recent interview, the actor revealed many interesting behind-the-scenes stories, including filming the ocean swimming scene himself - one of the most beloved scenes of the film.
"It was my first time swimming in the ocean, but I really wanted to do it myself," Park Bo Gum said.
Without the need for a stuntman, Park Bo Gum decided to do the scene himself in the middle of the vast ocean waves, where the character Gwan Sik is drifting in the middle of the ocean. He shared:
"They had a stunt double, but I said I wanted to do it myself. I love water, I love swimming, and I felt confident enough. The wave took me out quite far, my feet couldn't touch the bottom, but I thought: 'When will I have the opportunity to swim in the ocean like this again?' So I gave it my all."
The result was a breathtakingly beautiful, emotional scene that was highly praised by swimming experts. "I've had friends text me that professionals have praised the scene. I didn't practice anything before, so receiving compliments is really appreciated," he said.
For Park Bo Gum, the role of Gwan Sik is not only an acting challenge, but also an inner journey. He said that the character made him look back at how he loves and expresses his feelings to those around him.
"Gwan Sik is not a talkative person, but he lives wholeheartedly, quietly cares, and does everything with all his heart. He doesn't ask for anything, just silently contributes. I think, if I have a daughter in the future, I want her to meet someone like Gwan Sik."
The actor added, "From this role, I learned that I shouldn't be afraid to show my love - whether in a relationship or at work." Known for his "perfect" face, Park Bo Gum is not afraid to "sacrifice his beauty" for the role. He said he gained about 4-5kg to create a healthier and more realistic feeling.
"My makeup team and I darkened my entire body - from my face to my limbs - to give the impression that Gwan Sik is used to living under the Jeju sun. My face may still be slim, but my body is clearly bigger - which creates an interesting contrast."
With careful preparation and a receptive attitude, Park Bo Gum brought a close, simple, yet powerful Gwan Sik. Not only is it a good role, the character is also a bridge between Park Bo Gum and the audience - helping him reveal the deepest aspects of his soul.
When asked if he would like to work with screenwriter Lim Sang Choon again, the actor did not hesitate to answer: "I would love to. If I had the chance, I would ask: 'Can you choose me one more time?'"
When Life Gives You Tangerines is slowly coming to an end, and Park Bo Gum - with his humble charm and mature talent - has left behind one of the most memorable roles of his career.
On Nate, director Kim Won Suk said he put all his effort into making the film match the budget. The crew filmed in Andong City, creating many scenes that matched the time periods. "We used many visual effects to enhance the authenticity of the situations. The audience will feel like they are immersed in every frame of the film," the director said.
