"When Life Gives You Oranges" has created a buzz and is increasingly attracting viewers by exploiting new aspects, bringing more emotions with unexpected twists.
The acting of the main characters, especially IU, surprised many people. After an impressive debut, the film When Life Gives You Tangerines continues its emotional journey, exploring the complex and colorful lives of two resilient people on Jeju Island, South Korea. The main characters Oh Ae Sun and Yang Gwan Sik are portrayed in two stages: their youth played by IU and Park Bo Gum, and later played by Moon So Ri and Park Hae Joon.
The story spans from the 1950s to the 21st century, but breaks from the traditional format. Instead of telling the story chronologically, screenwriter Lim Sang Choon interweaves different stages in the lives of the two main characters, creating a realistic picture of life with many emotional levels, similar to the way Pachinko did.
What makes When Life Gives You Tangerines unique is the way it sets up the emotional clima.x. Instead of letting them happen at the end of the episode, the show pushes the clima.x moments to the very beginning, then focuses on the characters' reactions to the incident. One of the most memorable scenes is when Ae Sun runs along the pier, watching the ship carrying Gwan Sik leaving Jeju. The following episodes continue to bring many climaxes, such as when the strict grandmother Kim Chun Ok (played by Na Moon Hee) unexpectedly helps her grandson and his wife, or when disaster strikes unexpectedly on a stormy summer day.
The film depicts life as a series of peaks and valleys. "We often remember moments of great success or painfu.l loss, but in fact, human life is made up of the quiet moments after the incident" - SCMP commented on the film.
In episode eight, the most emotional scene is when a rich family's maid threatens to throw away Mi Hyang's (Kim Keum Soo) diamond ring, the same ring that Mi Hyang once accuse.d Ae Sun's daughter, Yang Geum Myeong (also played by IU), of stealing, just because she refused to chea.t on her daughter's exam.
SCMP commented that the film does not shy away from the difficulties that Korean people have faced on their journey to development, from class injustice, social prejudice to the effects of patriarchal ideology. Above all, this is not just the story of Ae Sun, but also the story of an entire country - where people have made constant efforts to overcome social and economic upheavals for decades.
Among the cast, Park Bo Gum's Gwan Sik makes a strong impression with his sincere love and steadfastness for Ae Sun. Without the need for flowery promises, his calmness and reliability are a solid support amid the ups and downs of Ae Sun's life. The relationship between the two main characters is not just a simple love story, but also a journey of maturity, of each person finding the meaning of life.
IU's acting improved surprisingly as she fully portrayed Ae Sun's sharp and mischievous personality. Park Bo Gum brought Gwan Sik's gentle gaze to life with hidden inner strength, making the character even more vivid and memorable.
From the perspective of director Kim Won Seok, Jeju Island is not only a setting but also an important character, accompanying Ae Sun and Gwan Sik's journey. Each changing season on the island is captured in poetic frames, highlighting the transformation in the characters' psychology and fate.
Not only focusing on the two main roles, the film also impressed with the supporting cast. Yeom Hye Ran, despite only appearing for a short time, still left a deep impression as Ae Sun's mother. Oh Min Ae transformed into Gwan Sik's mother, strict but full of emotion. In particular, the legendary Jeju divers (haenyeo) brought many humorous but equally emotional moments, contributing to the depth of the work.
In addition to its engaging content, ScreenRant assessed that the success of When Life Gives You a Tangerine partly depends on the producer's broadcasting plan. Instead of releasing 16 episodes at once, the film is divided into parts, each part consists of four episodes, representing spring, summer, fall, and winter. This method makes the audience curious and look forward to the next developments. They have time to ponder the details, discuss on social networks, creating a word-of-mouth effect.
