Recently, information appeared that singer and actress IU received a salary of up to 500 million won (about 345,000 USD) per episode in the new drama When Life Gives You Tangerines.
According to information from All Kpop, on March 18 (Korean time), a representative from Pan Entertainment, the film's production unit, confirmed to the media: "The information that IU received 500 million won for each episode is completely false."
The rumor originated from an anonymous post on an online forum, in which the writer claimed that IU and co-star Park Bo Gum were both paid 500 million won per episode for their roles in When Life Gives You Tangerines.
The post also mentioned the salaries of several other actors, including Park Hyung Sik, who reportedly received 500 million won per episode for Doctor Slump, and Lee Jung Jae, who was reportedly paid up to 1 billion won per episode for season 2 of Squid Game.
Although IU and the producer have denied it, the actress's actual salary in the film is still a mystery that makes many people curious.
The issue of Korean actors' salaries, especially famous stars, always attracts public attention. Previously, Song Hye Kyo, Kim Soo Hyun, and Jun Ji Hyun were also involved in rumors related to "huge" salaries.
The drama When Life Gives You Tangerines, starring IU and Park Bo Gum, is set on Jeju Island in the 1950s. The story follows the turbulent lives of Ae Soon, a rebellious but passionate gir.l, and Gwan Shik, a gentle but determined bo.y.
The film promises to bring an emotional coming-of-age story, following the two main characters through four seasons of the year.
With two A-list stars and a unique retro setting, When Life Gives You Tangerines is one of the most anticipated Korean dramas of the year.
When Life Gives You Tangerines is currently in the top Korean movies, leading the number of Netflix viewers in Vietnam and many countries. Portraying the character from the ag.e of 16 to nearly 30, IU portrays a poor fishing village woman with progressive thoughts, sacrificing everything for her chil.d. She is recognized for her acting when expressing the character's many emotions, especially impressive in the painfu.l scenes when witnessing the deat.h of her son.
IU was born in 1993 in a poor family, her childhood and adolescence had many similarities with her role in When Life Gives You a Tangerine. She entered showbiz at the ag.e of 15, after being rejected more than 20 times in music trainee auditions. After two years in the profession, IU became famous thanks to her high-pitched voice and good composing ability.
Recently, there was information that IU had refused the movie Queen of Tears. Because of that, she did not reunite with Kim Soo Hyun again. After the great success of this romantic movie, many people felt sorry for IU. Instead of Queen of Tears, IU returned to the small screen after 6 years with When Life Gives You Tangerines. For those who have watched this work, I believe that everyone must admit that IU made a very wise choice.
When Life Gives You Tangerine is a work with great content and gives a lot of space for actors to express themselves. The character of young Ae Sun is a difficult role, but IU performed it very well, making the audience have a completely different view of her, saying that her acting level has reached a new level.
More importantly, if she had acted in Queen of Tears with Kim Soo Hyun, even though the film would still be popular, such a purely romantic work might have caused IU to be judged as having taken a step back from her time in Hotel Del Luna. However, this did not happen when she contributed to the extremely successful When Life Gives You Oranges.
