The "female monsters" in the marriage brokerage company continuously trick people into getting married and then quickly getting divorced to seize the dowry and divide the assets. Some people earn billions in a few months.
A group of matchmaking companies in China is under investigation by police for defrauding large sums of mone.y from single men. Some women in the ring can earn up to 300,000 yuan (over 1 billion VND) in just a few months.
Red Star News reported in September that a police station in the Huaguoyuan area had received 180 reports of matchmaking fraud since March 2023. During that time, the court had resolved 50 disputes related to matchmaking fees.
Before the crackdown, many matchmaking agencies rented high-end offices at Huaguoyuan to boost their clientele. Some staff actively sought out single men from small and remote cities across the country, while others focused on recruiting single women, many of whom were divorced and in debt, and convincing them to join in defrauding male clients.
In many cases, male clients agree to marry the women arranged by the agency just days after meeting them. They are instructed to sign a contract with the agency and pay hundreds of thousands of yuan (100,000 yuan is equivalent to 350 million VND) in dowry. These are flash marriages, with the bride often running away, disappearing, or pressuring her husband into divorc.e in various ways, including frequent conflicts immediately after the wedding.
A notorious "bride" in the industry earned 300,000 yuan (over 1 billion VND) in 3 months by participating in many flash marriages. She registered her marriage with a client in December 2023 and filed for divorc.e shortly after, citing domestic violenc.e.
Not only did she not return the 170,000 yuan (594 million VND) dowry, she also took some of the joint assets, including the car her husband had bought her. Immediately after the divorc.e, the woman went on blind dates again because the agency hid her divorc.e status.
Mr. Lao, a victi.m of the marriage scam, shared his experience with Red Star News: In May, Liao traveled from his hometown in Hubei Province to Guiyang to meet a woman introduced by a matchmaking agency. He registered the marriage just two days later and paid a dowry of 118,000 yuan (US$18,000) to the brideâs family.
In the two months after their marriage, Liao's wif.e frequently left Hubei to return to Guiyang. She asked her husband to buy her a house and a car, and they often argued. Later, Liao discovered the truth that his wif.e had hidden: She had five children. When Liao asked the Guiyang agency for a refund, he discovered that the agency had closed due to a police investigation. A former customer service representative at one of the agencies said they had no shortage of customers: "We are not worried about the source of male customers because there are many of them all over the country. We can choose a male customer for a blind date from 40 to 50 candidates every day."
He added that after the crackdown by Guiyang authorities, some marriage brokerage companies have moved their operations to neighboring Yunnan province.
This is just one of the typical cases of 'capital' marriage. Accordingly, in our country, there was a case where in need of mone.y, 3 other people pretended to be family, made fake marriage certificates to marry a Chinese person, and then appropriated the dowry mone.y.
Hanoi City Police said that Soc Son District Police had arrested four people who had tricked Chinese people into marrying them to steal dowry gifts. The suspects included Hoang Thi Hoai Linh (27 years old, from Ba Ria - Vung Tau province), Lam Minh Ngoc Dao (20 years old, from O Mon district, Can Tho), Lam Nha Tran (21 years old, from Bac Lieu province), and Nguyen Hoang Long (34 years old, from Cai Lay district, Tien Giang).
According to authorities, a working group of Soc Son District Police on patrol to ensure security and order at Noi Bai International Airport discovered two men (Chinese nationality) arguing with a woman.
Upon inspection, the woman was identified as Lam Minh Ngoc Dao. A man presented his marriage certificate to Dao. This man said that on the way back to China to register their marriage, a conflict arose between the two parties.
Conducting verification at Dao's residence, the police learned that Dao had not registered to marry a foreigner. Seeing that the case was unusual, the task force took all three people to the headquarters for questioning.
The purpose of the subjects was to appropriate the mone.y and dowry gifts to share. The bride would then flee on the way to China. Soc Son District Police mobilized many working groups to identify related subjects in the southern provinces. After more than a week of investigation, Soc Son District Police arrested the above 4 subjects for fraud and property appropriation.
