Hung King's death anniversary is a Vietnamese holiday held annually on the 10th day of the third lunar month at Hung Temple, Viet Tri, Phu Tho. This is a traditional festival of the nation aimed at remembering the merits of the Hung Kings who built the country.
According to legend, the Hung Vuong dynasty had 18 kings. The first Hung King ascended the throne in 2879 BC, named the country Van Lang, divided the country into 15 departments, passed down the throne until 258 BC, then lost the throne to Thuc Phan An Duong Vuong.
Thus, the Hung Dynasty lasted about 2,600 years. If divided on average by 18 kings, each king was approximately 150 years. Explaining this, some scholars believe that actually the 18 generations of Hung Kings were not 18 specific individuals, but 18 branches, each of which had many kings who took turns ruling and shared the same royal title. Even the number 18 is only symbolic and conventional, because 18 is a multiple of 9 - a sacred number for Vietnamese people.
There are so many Hung kings, but there is only one Hung King's death anniversary; So which king's death anniversary is it? This is something many people still wonder about.
First, we must talk about the origin of the Vietnamese people. Legend has it that Kinh Duong Vuong married Long Nu and gave birth to Lac Long Quan. Lac Long Quan then married Au Co and gave birth to Hung King.
Hung Vuong was thus the grandson of Kinh Duong Vuong, a reign name used for dozens of subsequent dynasties. The Ancestor's Anniversary, therefore, according to logic, must be Kinh Duong Vuong's Ancestor's Anniversary, to commemorate the Patriarch who gave birth to the country.
In fact, according to some historical documents, the Anniversary date existed about 2,000 years ago. During the reign of Thuc Phan - An Duong Vuong, an oath stone pillar was erected on Nghia Linh mountain, clearly stating: "May the heaven and earth witness, the Southern country will be forever preserved at the Hung King's temple, forever looking after it." Hung family mausoleum and preserving the country that Hung Vuong handed over; if the promise is broken, the oath will be blown away by the wind and hammered.
Other later generations of kings also always remembered and affirmed the role of the Hung Kings' era in building the country. That's why every year there is always a day to commemorate those who established and built the country - the Hung Kings in general.
Previously, people did not have the custom of going to Hung Temple on March 10. They often choose auspicious days according to each person's destiny and enthusiastically come to worship Hung Kings throughout the year, most often in spring and autumn, without specifying a specific day. The local Patriarch worship ceremony is held on the 12th day of the 3rd lunar month in combination with Turkish worship. Usually, when children and grandchildren return from far away, they will celebrate their death anniversary one day in advance (March 11) rather than hold a large festival on a national scale.
Thus, the time of worshiping often lasts continuously, both costing money and not being able to clearly express respect, and not being able to gather people's hearts. Realizing this, in 1917 (Khai Dinh dynasty), Phu Tho Governor Le Trung Ngoc made a report to the Ministry of Rites, asking for a rule to take the 10th day of the third lunar month every year as a day of worship for the whole country. From then on, every March 10, people across the country turned to the land of origin - Hy Cuong, Lam Thao, Phu Tho communes to honor the merits of the Hung Kings. March 10 is called Hung King's Death Anniversary.
Up to now, Hung King's Anniversary is still considered the National Death Anniversary, an important holiday of the country. Employees have a day off from work on this day.
