The news of Pope Francis' sudden deat.h shocked the world, with the cause of his departure being announced as health-related. Rumors about his successor spread quickly, creating a wave of heated debate and speculation.
On April 21, the world was shocked by the news that Pope Francis had breathed his last. He passed away at the ag.e of 88, ending 12 years as the spiritual leader of the Catholic Church.
According to information from the Vatican, the cause of Pope Francis' passing was determined to be a stroke, followed by a coma and finally irreversible heart failure. The Pope passed away at 7:35 a.m. (local time) at his residence in the Santa Marta guesthouse in the Vatican.
Dr. Andrea Arcangeli, director of the Vatican City State Health and Hygiene Department, signed the official confirmation, and the Holy See press office released the report on the evening of April 21 (local time).
According to the medical report, the Pope has a history of acute respiratory failure due to bilateral pneumonia caused by multiple bacteria, widespread bronchiectasis, high bloo.d pressure and type 2 diabetes.
During his 12-year reign, Pope Francis has suffered from many illnesses, and recently faced serious complications from bilateral pneumonia, which forced him to spend 38 days in hospital at Gemelli University Hospital in Rome in February and March.
His passing was confirmed through electrocardiographic thanatography.
"I confirm that the cause of deat.h, according to my knowledge and professional assessment, is as stated above," Dr. Arcangeli concluded.
Earlier, the Vatican released Pope Francis' spiritual will, in which he expressed his wish to be buried at the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome, instead of St. Peter's Basilica like many of his predecessors.
He wanted to be buried underground, "without special decorations", with only the pope's name in Latin engraved on it: Franciscus.
"As I feel the twilight of my earthly life approaching, with the firm hope of eternal life, I wish to express my final wishes regarding the place of my burial," the will (dated June 29, 2022) reads. "May the Lord rewar.d all those who have loved me and continue to pray for me."
Pope Francis' body will be dressed in papal vestments and laid to rest in St. Peter's Basilica for the public to pay their respects. During this time, prayers and requiem masses will be held in Catholic churches around the world and at St. Peter's Basilica.
The deat.h of Pope Francis has left a huge void in the Catholic Church and the world. The question of his successor is taking center stage, sparking heated discussions about the future of the Church. The conclave, a crucial and secretive event, will decide who will succeed him.
Potential candidates, such as Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, Cardinal Jean-Marc Aveline and Cardinal Peter Erdo, each bring their own qualities and experiences. Cardinal Tagle, with his approachable personality and progressive views, is widely expected to continue Pope Francisâ path of reform. Cardinal Parolin, with his extensive experience in managing Church affairs, is seen as a candidate with strong leadership abilities. Cardinal Zuppi, with his active work for peace, is highly regarded for his spirit of reconciliation. Cardinal Aveline, with his open-mindedness, is seen as someone who can connect with the younger generation. Cardinal Erdo, representing the conservatives, could bring balance to the Church.
However, the selection of a Pope is not only based on personal competence but also depends on the historical context and the challenges facing the Church. The conclave will carefully consider these factors to choose the most suitable leader who can guide the Church through its difficulties and continue its mission in the modern world.
