The "underworld" market - a familiar place that any tourist will visit when coming to Dalat. Now, right in the city center, such a market was born, but the strange way of operating here always makes fans curious.
Located at the junction of Tran Hung Dao B Street and Luu Xuan Tin Street (District 5, Ho Chi Minh City), this "underworld" market starts at 3am. In the dim darkness or under the yellow light, buyers and sellers bid a whole stretch of Tran Hung Dao street.
The fact that the market only opened for sale for 3 hours and then disappeared "as if it never existed" makes many people feel strange but equally interesting.
Accordingly, for aquarists (ornamental fish), almost no one is unaware of Luu Xuan Tin market. This is known as the unique and unique night aquarium trading world in Saigon that has existed for more than 50 years. In particular, this "underworld" aquarium market is open only from 3 to 6 am, then quickly "disappears" without a trace until the next night.
An interesting point of this "underworld" aquarium market is that customers who come to buy fish have to reptile on the sidewalk, making viewers laugh at times. Accordingly, because the blind street light is difficult to observe fish to choose to buy, customers will be lent a flashlight to select fish. The sight of cow traders holding lamps to look at fish is considered a characteristic feature of this market.
Fish here of all kinds, from common goods to rare and expensive goods, are put in plastic wrap containing water and oxygen, sold right on the sidewalk. At the market, in addition to selling aquarium fish, such as seven colors, blue tarzan, tiger, full gold, full red guppy, koi, arhat, beta, discus, three tails ..., small traders also sell worms, cows, baba, turtles, snails, dragons, duckweeds, ornamental crabs, locusts, grasshoppers, cloves, frogs ...
As noted, customers here are mainly men with a passion for aquarium fish. Not only people in the Ho Chi Minh City area come to buy, but others in neighboring provinces and cities who have a hobby of "playing" aquarium fish also come. According to small traders, the price of fish depends on each type and size, such as three-tailed fish costs 180,000 VND per bag of 20 small fish, guppies 180,000 to 200,000 VND / bag of about 20 small fish.... In general, each plastic fish wrap costs from 150,000 - 200,000 VND, even up to several million VND depending on the rarity and uniqueness of the fish.
Struggling to prepare aquarium fish to sell to customers, Ms. XÃ Muoi (from Nha Be district) said she had to go from her house at 2am to catch the market, although it was hard, she was still determined to follow the aquarium business for more than 20 years.
"My relatives go to the market early, so I also have to get up early to sell to them, every day is 2-3am, it is very hard, but because of my life. 6 o'clock has to leave the market, some days there are customers, sitting hard and no one buys", Ms. XÃ Muoi shared.
It is known that the reason why the markets with the name "underworld" sounds both unique and ... As creepy as it was, it was because the market was open at night, and the street lights weren't there yet. Street vendors, small eateries are lit up with oil lamps, flashlights, or even merchants and customers have to look with a phone flash to choose the desired items.
"This market is a night market, people call the underworld market is not very reasonable, probably just a way to compare," Hai said.
It was bustling, but around 6 a.m. the market was sparse. The newly purchased aquarium motorcycles hurriedly delivered the fish to aquarium shops in the city. The "underworld" aquarium market also disappeared strangely, returning Tran Hung Dao road back to traffic.
Although it only exists briefly for about 3 hours, for decades, Luu Xuan Tin aquarium market has become a separate and unique market in Ho Chi Minh City.
