SBS News reported that a Vietnamese worker was found to have passed away in his rented room in Ulsan city (South Korea) because he was too frugal to turn on the heater in the cold weather.

On December 21, according to South Korea's SBS Television, the man who did not survive was Mr. A. (about 30 years old) who used to work on a boat at Jeongja port in Ulsan city. The ill-fated young man lived in a dormitory for foreign workers in the area.

Initial information, early in the morning of December 19, when the weather in Korea dropped below minus 0 degrees, everything was almost frozen, friends discovered A. had difficulty breathing. They quickly took him to the hospital when his heart stopped with fragile hope.

"When I arrived, he couldn't move, he could only cough and breathe a few breaths," said A.'s Vietnamese neighbor. The young man had to endure the most difficult time of his life in the cold winter of the land of kimchi. Finally died at a young age despite doctors' efforts to save him.

The police said that the cause of A.'s death was due to an unexpected incident. According to forensic examination results, he died of cardiovascular disease. As colleagues recounted, this person also often complained about stress and fatigue due to a poor working environment.

It is known that A.'s family's situation was difficult, and the owner of the facility did not pay his salary, causing all of his family's expenses to be almost "frozen". To cope with each daily meal, A. had to borrow money from friends everywhere. Neighbors sadly recounted that in the winter, the weather was subzero, but this young man did not dare turn on the heater to save money.

The Foreigners Support Center in Ulsan confirmed the information that during the past month, the owner of Mr. A.'s workplace has withheld employee salaries. Therefore, workers like the victim do not have money to cover their living expenses and save money by cutting costs on heating materials, nor can they register for health insurance.

"The workers said that because they were not paid, they had to make ends meet, even having to borrow money from acquaintances to buy food," said an employee of the Foreign Resident Support Center.

Also according to information from SBS News, as of last year (2022), the number of foreigners living in Ulsan exceeded 26,000 and 6,000 of them registered as workers. Park Yoo Ri - Director of the Foreign Resident Support Center in Ulsan said:

"Most of them are sailors on ships and come from Indonesia or Vietnam. Because these jobs are very difficult and strenuous, many people leave without permission."

With the number of workers increasing rapidly, many foreigners fall into the "blind spot" of welfare programs and cannot receive timely medical treatment and support.
