According to doctors at Vietnam-Swedish Hospital Uong Bi (Quang Ninh), myocardial infarction is a dangerous disease common in the elderly. Because in this age group, blood vessels become stiff and less elastic, with widespread atherosclerotic plaques causing narrowing of the blood vessels, causing the heart to pump blood into the arteries and always encounter resistance, so it has to work harder.

In the long term, it will lead to thickening of the heart. The thicker the heart, the more blood it needs to nourish it, while the blood vessels narrow, leading to myocardial infarction, with the most serious complications being heart failure and cardiogenic shock. This makes the heart unable to perform its function of contracting and pushing blood to feed the body, and the patient can die at any time if not treated promptly.

However, recently the disease tends to rejuvenate. Doctors at Hanoi Heart Hospital have treated many cases of myocardial infarction in people under the age of 40.

According to Vinmec Hospital, statistics at major hospitals today show that the rate of myocardial infarction in young people has increased to 10.5% and in very young people is 1.8%. There have been cases where patients as young as 26 years old had a heart attack and were in critical condition when they arrived at the hospital.

Signs and symptoms of a heart attack

According to the Cleveland Clinic, many people feel pain in their chest when they have a heart attack. The patient may feel uncomfortable, like something is pressing on the chest or heavy... It can start in the chest and spread to other areas such as the left arm (or both arms), shoulder, neck, jaw, back or down towards your waist.

A heart attack can have many symptoms, some more common than others. The symptoms people describe most often include:

- Chest pain (angina).

- Shortness of breath.

- Heart beats fast.

- Worry.

- Feeling lightheaded, dizzy or unconscious.

Among them, the most obvious warning symptom of myocardial infarction is chest pain.

When you have such chest pain, go to the nearest hospital possible or to a hospital with an interventional cardiovascular center.

What leads to a heart attack?

This condition is mostly caused by a blockage in one of the blood vessels that supply blood to the heart. Typically, this happens because plaque can build up inside your arteries (similar to how pouring grease down the kitchen sink can clog your home's plumbing).

That buildup is called atherosclerosis. When large amounts of atherosclerotic material build up in the blood vessels leading to the heart, this is called coronary artery disease.

Sometimes, plaque buildup inside a coronary (heart) artery can rupture and a blood clot can become trapped where the rupture occurred. If a blood clot blocks an artery, this can deprive the heart muscle of blood and cause a heart attack.

A heart attack can occur if the plaque does not rupture, but this is very rare and accounts for only about 5% of all heart attacks. This type of heart attack can occur for the following reasons:

Other conditions can cause your heart to not get as much blood as it should for a long period of time, such as when your blood pressure is too low, your oxygen levels are too low, or your heart rate is too fast.

Who is susceptible to myocardial infarction?

- Men over 45 and women over 50 are at high risk of myocardial infarction. However, even young people can have myocardial infarction but at a lower rate.

- People who have had a heart attack before are very susceptible to having a heart attack again.

- People with a family history of early myocardial infarction such as a father or brother with a myocardial infarction under the age of 55 and a mother or sister with a myocardial infarction under the age of 65.

- Patients with diabetes.
