Bran: GenZ 'vomited' because of grasping 'love' sticky rice, many details 'proved dangerous'?

Sticky rice balls, jar of fish sauce, goby,... things that seem very normal in real life, but when they are included in the film, they make people "cry".

A horror film developed in the direction of a variant of the ancient story, Cam (2024) by the director duo Tran Huu Tan - NSX Hoang Quan received a lot of attention from the audience after more than 1 week in theaters. However, in addition to the compliments for the setting, costumes and acting, the film also caused mixed opinions, when the horror element was not "dollar" enough or there were many confusing and unnecessary changes.

However, there is one thing that makes everyone realize that the film is very good at "scaring people" to make viewers' hearts beat. Because there are many scenes full of horror elements from character creation to the surrounding scenery: it is dark, everything is stained with red syrup, gloomy. Many people even think that there are scenes where they only dare to open their eyes because they are afraid.

Besides, many people think that there are things that seem normal and pure but when brought into the movie, they become so obsessed that they "vomit" because they are too scary. "It's hard to imagine that the director would think of blackening even familiar dishes and animals to become so scary. From the camera angle, their details all make me shudder. Now I can't look at those things normally," one netizen commented.

First, it must be mentioned the lotus leaf sticky rice balls that Cam (Lam Thanh My) cooked himself for Bom (Doan Hoang). No need to imagine, in fact, sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaves is considered "the beauty of the world" because of the blend of the aroma of glutinous rice with lotus leaves. For many people, this is also included in the list of favorite cabinet items.

In the film, no exception, initially the sticky rice package was described in a poetic and lyrical way, conveying a meaningful story of Bran and Mane. However, in the middle of the movie, the eye-catching lotus leaf sticky rice package became "haunting" when the outer shell became sticky, covered with red fluid. As for the inside of the sticky rice balls, the velvet maggots, and the sticky rice seeds are no longer clear white.

But it didn't stop there, the scene where Bom had to try to eat that sticky rice continued to make viewers "shudder". The mane eats while vomiting because surely in addition to the form, the smell and taste of that "love" sticky rice ball also becomes the most horrible ever. This made netizens express that now just by looking at the sticky rice package, they can imagine that scene and stop and transfer another dish to enjoy.

From fairy tales to the movie Bran, gobies have always been a special companion. When Cam was not yet ruled by Bai Lao, she cherished and loved gobies very much. Every day, Cam feeds gobies, shows off to Mane, to Tam (Rima Thanh Vy) about this special member.

However, when the familiar phrase "bong bang bang" was suddenly raised with a horror version, things were different. "Bong bong bang bang, eat my flesh and blood, my family's flesh and blood" - the sound haunted the entire audience in the theater, but it was still not as good as the scene of Cam holding up the goby and "mukbang" on the spot.

Bran ate a goby swimming down the well, without a moment's hesitation, and even ate it in a ghostly way. Along with that, the director chose to show the camera angle from Cam's mouth, step by step chewing and swallowing gobies, causing creepiness. An audience member who watched the movie commented: "At first, I, like Mane, thought of gobies and pepper gobies. And now it's so strange... Gobies have always made sashimi, just thinking about it makes me feel horrible."

In fairy tales, the detail of Tam taking the body of Cam to display the fish sauce for his step-aunt has always been something that many people cannot imagine. And in the movie Cam (2024), the director and producer have clearly shown this with images.

This dish, just hearing the name, was creepy, but when I looked at it, it was really hair-raising. In addition, the acting of her step-aunt (Thuy Diem), she uses her hands to eat rice, picking up vegetables, rice, and then fish sauce. The jar of fish sauce, which was already slimy, sticky, and wet, was zoomed in close-up when picked up by hand and then slowly put in the mouth, causing the audience in the theater to "cry" because it was too disgusting.

Or in a specific scene depicting a jar of fish sauce, the audience could not see clearly what was in it, but the full exposure of Cam's eyes was enough to startle him. A dish that is not beautiful in appearance, probably not okay in taste, is rated by netizens as the top things that cause the most "breathlessness" in the movie.

If horror movies in recent years are full of jumpscare scenes, Cam brings a different color, from the way the character is shaped with a distorted half of the face and sagging eyes to the way parents treat their children. Similar to Tet in Hell Village or Soul Eater, the characteristic feature of director Tran Huu Tan's works is the integration of Vietnamese folklore materials.

From traditional costumes, props, and the context of Huong village; swinging games, playing human chess; specialty dishes... are all simple and close to the audience.

Lam Thanh My plays the role of Cam with a natural, unforced acting style. She shows quite good psychological development through each stressful situation. And Rima Thanh Vy, Quoc Cuong, Thuy Diem, Artist Thuy Hanh and Doan Hoang are at the level of round shoulders.

Cam brings a new perspective on the story of Tam Cam: no one is completely good or bad, everyone has both sides and the boundary between them is very fragile, difficult to distinguish clearly. Bran is about 120 minutes long, due to the need to build a personality and story for each character, making the script line long and draggy, leading to logical grains.

The work has a rather long opening when more than half of the film's time is only devoted to telling the legend of the curse and the story of Cam being negatively complained about by the world.
