Chili coffee is sought after by fans, it sounds stomach-churning, but selling hundreds of cups every day is still sold out

Chili coffee is a strange drink that is hot on social networking sites in China and is flocked to experience by people. However, according to experts, if people want to drink it, they need to keep a few things in mind.

Since video social media platforms like TikTok have come closer to many people, many unique dishes have become extremely popular and become a trend eaten by young people. Since then, food and drink businesses have also "raced" to launch many unprecedented dishes, in order to attract the attention of customers.

Recently, a café in China attracted attention with a unique drink when it decided to put fried chili peppers and chili powder in a cup of coffee. Accordingly, this shop known as Jingshi Coffee opened coffee sales in Guangzhou, Jiangxi, eastern China. In December 2023, Jingshi Coffee launched its chili pepper coffee and now sells more than 300 cups a day, according to Pear Video.

A viral video on the country's TikTok platform documenting the process of creating chili coffee shows store employees putting sliced, dried chili peppers in an iced latte and then adding chili powder before serving. It is known that this drink is currently sold for about 20 yuan (about 68,000 VND) / cup with the name Jiangxi Spicy Latte.

Although the combination may sound "a bit stomach-churning", for guests who have enjoyed this dish, they think it tastes better than people imagine. The store's staff said customer feedback on the new drink has been overwhelmingly positive.

It is likely that in the near future, spicy coffee will be available in Vietnam, similar to other hot trend dishes (coin cake, stone grilled sausages,...). However, the aforementioned unique drink still makes some people worried.

Notably, this isn't the first time cafes in China have experimented with exotic combination drinks. Earlier, in September 2023, the coffee mixed with Mao Dai wine, a famous wine in China, also received a lot of attention.

Further back in 2021, a coffee shop in the northern province of Shanxi, an area where people like to dip food with vinegar, also added the spice to its Americano coffee. Since the drink with many novel spices is very hot, experts have made precautions before someone enjoys it.

TS. Tu Ngu, General Secretary of the Vietnam Nutrition Association said that currently, on the market, many types of coffee are added with different spices and ingredients, such as salted coffee, chili coffee... In addition, there are also coffees that are advertised not to cause insomnia.

"Adding spices and ingredients to coffee is the taste of consumers. Some people who cannot drink bitter add sugar, milk. Similarly, people who like spicy add chili, like salty, add salt ... Adding spices to coffee only works to increase the drinker's enjoyment", Dr. Words said.

The expert also analyzed, coffee itself is a food that increases arousal to create alertness. Therefore, if you want to make coffee with other spices, you need to pay attention to safety. And dried peppers are at great risk of being contaminated with aflatoxin.

Often, dried peppers infected with aflatoxin fungus can be caused by conditions of harvesting, drying, storage, grinding and drying into powder (or whole peppers) that do not ensure quality or do not control temperature as well as humidity, hygiene safety.

According to experts, although it is rare to die immediately when eating foods contaminated with large amounts of aflatoxin such as dried chili peppers, prolonged consumption of foods contaminated with fungi can affect many parts of the body, including the liver.
