The case of singer Dan Truong calling for donations through his personal account has created a wave of strong debate, becoming a lesson about transparency in charity. The incident is not only about one artist but is a warning to celebrities and the public.
In recent days, public opinion has been particularly interested in the case of singer Dan Truong calling for charity using his personal account. Although he quickly published a statement and explained that this activity was small and friendly to fans, the incident still caused a lot of controversy. Because, since Decree 93/2021/ND-CP took effect, all charitable fundraising activities must comply with specific regulations to ensure transparency and avoid legal risks.
Not only Dan Truong, but also a number of other artists have been caught up in similar situations. Singer Duong Hong Loan once called for donations for another individual but only published a manual list of donations instead of a bank statement. Actress Hien Mai also called for donations for a business club with an amount of up to hundreds of millions of VND, but the public disclosure method still did not meet the requirements of transparency. These cases show that artists using their personal reputation to call for charity is facing many shortcomings, especially when public trust is increasingly placed on clarity and transparency.
The representative of the Ho Chi Minh City Bar Association emphasized that all spontaneous charity activities must be within the legal framework. When an individual initiates a call for and receives money from others, a civil relationship is established. Therefore, citing the reason of small scale, only calling on loyal fans or doing it abroad cannot exempt the responsibility of transparency. This means that artists, celebrities or any individual must comply with the basic steps: open a separate account for each charity, publicize the purpose and recipients of support, and make a statement and announce it after the end.
In fact, these regulations are not as difficult as many people worry. Currently, opening an online bank account only takes a few minutes on the phone. Individuals can name the account according to the charitable purpose, and can easily lock or close it after the program ends. This is a solution that is both legal and creates peace of mind for donors. In the context of technological development, there is no reason to continue to maintain the previous lack of transparency.
In addition, the law also clearly stipulates the use of charity money. Activists are not allowed to arbitrarily change the spending purpose without notifying the contributors. They are also not allowed to deduct logistics costs if they have committed that the entire amount will go to the people. The distribution of money and goods must be based on a specific list or in coordination with local authorities, avoiding improvisation. If there is any remaining money, individuals are not allowed to keep it for themselves but must notify it to transfer it to another program or deposit it into a reputable fund.
Looking back at controversial cases, from singer Thuy Tien to artist Hoai Linh, it can be seen that public trust has been shaken many times by the lack of transparency. Therefore, Dan Truong's incident once again becomes a strong reminder that artists not only need talent but also social responsibility. Their reputation is not only their image on stage but also the trust of millions of fans when participating in charity activities.
In the 4.0 era, transparency is no longer an option but a requirement. Artists can choose safer ways such as calling for contributions to reputable charity funds or authorizing professional organizations to manage finances. This helps them avoid legal risks and strengthens public trust. Because once trust is lost, it will be extremely difficult to restore.
From Dan Truongâs story, the lesson learned is that Vietnamese artists need to change their thinking about charity. We cannot continue to rely on emotions or personal prestige while ignoring legal regulations. Transparency is the key to maintaining trust, while affirming that charity is not only a humanitarian act but also a social responsibility carried out professionally.
