Two brothers Dao Van Vu (born in 2001) accidentally met, fell in love and decided to marry two sisters Le Thi Bich Ngoc (born in 2002) from the same hometown despite the objections of their families. Their marriage had many surprises.
Accordingly, Vu and Ngoc met each other through Facebook in November 2019 when he was working in Dong Nai and she was working in Ho Chi Minh City. Two months later, on the occasion of Lunar New Year 2020, they both returned to their hometown and arranged to meet.
As if struck by love at first sight, the couple dated soon after. After a month of long-distance love, Vu and Ngoc decided to return to their hometown to work together to be closer to each other.
Once when he went to Ngoc's house to visit, Vu brought his brother along. "That time, my brother met Ngoc's older sister, and by some coincidence, they both liked each other. So we both fell in love with the two sisters there," Vu said.
Knowing the story, Vu's parents strongly opposed it. "My parents are worried that the next generation will have difficulty addressing each other. At first, my wife's parents were open to letting their children get to know each other, but then they thought about the complicated way of addressing each other and also forbade it," Vu shared.
Despite family objections, the two couples still love each other.
In June 2021, Ngoc became pregnant. The couple asked their parents for permission to hold an engagement ceremony, register their marriage, and move in together. Their wedding was postponed because they did not have the means to hold it.
Not long after, Ngoc's older sister also became pregnant. The couple kept this a secret, only telling her husband's family. Only when she was about to give birth did her mother's family find out.
At the end of 2022, when the son turned 1 year old, Vu's brother and Ngoc's sister got married. The story of "two brothers marrying two sisters" of Vu's family caused a stir in the whole countryside for a long time.
"Which side do you refer to?"
Currently, both couples are workers. They rent a house near each other, 35km from their hometown. Vu and his brother are independent, and after getting married and having children, they became even more independent. For Vu, the fact that they are both sons-in-law in the same family is nothing special.
"We each have our own jobs and a small family to take care of, so we arrange our own lives. When one of us has difficulties, the other helps. I think all brothers are like that," Vu shared.
For Ngoc, having two sisters marry into the same family has many advantages. Ngoc and her sisters are close and love each other, so they always care for and worry about each other. The two sisters are willing to put aside petty conflicts so that their relationship does not get damaged.
"We go everywhere together. In the afternoon, after work, we both take our children out. On weekends, when we have time off from work, we take our children back to the countryside to visit their grandparents. Living close to each other makes it easier for us to help each other," Ngoc said.
Ngoc sisters advise each other on how to be daughters-in-law and how to live to be loved by their husband's family. Ngoc's parents-in-law used to strongly oppose their love life, but now they love their two good daughters-in-law.
"My husband's parents love us very much. They said they used to forbid us, but now they feel lucky to marry two sisters, and our relationship has become even closer," Ngoc confided.
Addressing family members is not as complicated as people used to worry. The two couples set a rule of address: "Whichever side you are on, address that side."
"When we go to our paternal grandparents' house, my daughter calls us 'uncle', and our son calls us 'uncle - aunt'. When we go to our maternal grandparents' house, my daughter calls us 'aunt - uncle', and our son also calls us the same. Our maternal grandparents' house is further away, and we don't go there often, so the children are more used to addressing us as their paternal grandparents," Ngoc said.
In April 2024, after many years of saving, the couple Vu - Ngoc were able to get married. Vu was happy because he finally proved to his parents that he could take responsibility for his own choices.
