The legal battle between Hang Du Muc and her husband Ton Bang is attracting the attention of the online community.
The incident broke out on August 10 when Hang Du Muc publicly posted pictures of her injuries caused by her husband on social media.
The incident became so serious that the police had to intervene and arrest Ton Bang to stop the violence.
Before things got to the point where it was beyond saving, Hang Du Muc's husband changed his attitude 5 or 7 times, from being angry to being gentle and then pleading with his wife.
This makes the public extremely confused. However, recently, some netizens have pieced together the story and guessed the reason why Ton Bang did not dare to let go of his wife. Accordingly, having had 3 wives and 2 children makes it difficult for Ton Bang to get noticed by Chinese girls. Moreover, the bride price in the billion-people country is also skyrocketing, even having to pay a huge amount of money to get a wife, forcing this man to cling to the female tiktoker.
Specifically, many experts say this trend could make young people more worried about the future, leading to a decline in the marriage rate in the country of a billion people.
According to China's Ministry of Civil Affairs, the number of new marriage registrations fell 18% to 1.46 million couples in the second quarter of 2024. This was the second-lowest level on record, behind the 1.39 million couples who got married in the fourth quarter of 2022.
Expensive bride prices are one of the reasons why Chinese people do not want to get married. According to a study by Professor Gong Weigang of Wuhan University, the average bride price was 9,000 yuan (more than 30 million VND) in 2007 and started to increase sharply from 2008. To date, the amount of bride prices has increased more than tenfold due to the gender imbalance and the increasing cost of living.
The amount of the bride price varies by region and tends to be higher in eastern China such as Shanghai, Fujian, and Jiangxi, where the cost of living is high and has long been affected by a gender imbalance. Topping the list is Jiangxi province, where the current average bride price is around 830,000 yuan (US$110,000). According to Zhihu, in the first half of January 2023, a woman in Jiangxi asked her boyfriend's family for a dowry of nearly 20 million yuan (US$3.3 million).
In mid-June, more than 100 parents attended a marriage fair at Tianhe Park in Guangzhou, displaying flyers detailing their children's names, ages, heights, education levels, personalities, occupations and other qualities, and outlining their expectations for their future sons-in-law.
"If my son really loves his partner, we are willing to pay the expensive dowry," said the mother of a 40-year-old man.
A 30-year-old man attending the event said: "I feel pressured to buy a house for my wife's family. If the dowry is too expensive, I will choose not to get married."
In late June, volunteers in Luoyang City, Henan Province visited the homes of single men and women, calling on them to abandon the custom of paying expensive dowries and promote more modern, civilized marriages.
In December 2023, the Supreme People's Court of China published a judicial interpretation of the dowry dispute. If the couple only lived together for a short time after marriage, the court would favor returning the dowry, provided they did not have children. If the couple lived together for a long time and had children, the court would not favor returning the money.
In February 2024, the Supreme People's Court of China clarified the concept of bride price and the principles for its refund, saying that parents could be called in in the event of a dispute over the bride price, as they are often involved in arranging marriages for their children.
