The court summoned Nguyen Phuong Hang and her husband to try journalist Han Ni

The People's Court of Ho Chi Minh City summoned Ms. Nguyen Phuong Hang and Mr. Huynh Uy Dung to the trial of defendant Han Ni as persons with related interests and obligations on March 1.

On March 1, Ho Chi Minh City opened the first trial of defendants Dang Thi Han Ni (46 years old) and Tran Van Sy (66 years old) for abusing the rights to freedom and democracy to infringe upon the interests of the State, the legitimate rights and interests of organizations and individuals under Article 331 of the Penal Code.

The trial was presided over by Judge Ngo Ngoc Thang.

According to the decision to bring the case to trial, the court summoned Ms. Nguyen Phuong Hang (53 years old, General Director of Dai Nam Joint Stock Company), Mr. Huynh Uy Dung (62 years old, Chairman of Dai Nam Joint Stock Company) to the court as persons with related interests and obligations.

Previously, Ms. Nguyen Phuong Hang was sentenced to 3 years in prison by Ho Chi Minh City TAND for "Abusing the rights to freedom and democracy to infringe upon the interests of the State, the legitimate rights and interests of organizations and individuals" for insulting the honor and reputation of 10 individuals.

The indictment states that, between September 2021 and February 2022, Han Ni used Han Ni's Youtube and Facebook accounts to post and organize many recording sessions with false content "in order to offend the dignity, honor and reputation of Ms. Nguyen Phuong Hang and Mr. Huynh Uy Dung"; infringing upon the legitimate interests of Dai Nam Joint Stock Company and Hang Huu Charity Foundation.

At the investigating agency, Han Ni confessed that the reason for the statements related to Ms. Nguyen Phuong Hang was because Ms. Hang made derogatory words about Han Ni when speaking live online on September 3, 2021.

Therefore, on September 3, 2021, Dang Thi Han Ni recorded and broadcast it online with the title: "Does Ms. Hang have the right to squat above the law?" to counter what Ms. Hang said incorrectly about defendant Han Ni "blackmailing businesses", "being Mr. T.T.T.C.'s father", "put the image of Han Ni "cursing the leader of a ministry", put the image of Han Ni and her ex-husband on social media to say 'being a girl', 'being reactionary'.

Sy testified that the reason for making the videos was that Ms. Hang made derogatory statements against artists and the press, and made words that were contrary to fine customs. He felt he had a "responsibility to contribute his voice" to limit Ms. Hang's negative influence. As for Mr. Dung, the defendant said that because he "often recorded with his wife"...

During the additional investigation, Ms. Hang and Mr. Dung withdrew their petition for Han Ni and lawyer Sy to pay compensation of VND300-500 billion. For some Facebookers who committed similar acts towards Ms. Hang, the investigating agency continued to coordinate with the Department of Cyber Security and High-tech Crime Prevention of Ho Chi Minh City Police to collect more evidence documents and handle them later.

Before her arrest in March 2022, Hang sent several complaints to the police of Binh Duong province, the police of Ho Chi Minh City, allegedly being "insulted, slandered" by journalist Han Ni and attacked Dai Nam Joint Stock Company's Hang Huu fund. She asked the authorities to deal with Han Ni; forcibly terminate the use of her image without consent, and pay damages.
