Cheo singing and mass cultural nights have instilled in little Thuy Van a burning passion for theater and cinema.
After completing high school, with the dream of becoming an actress, Thuy Van decided to enroll in the Vietnam Academy of Theatre and Cinema (now the Hanoi Academy of Theatre and Cinema). This choice opened a new chapter in her life, laying the foundation for a brilliant acting career. She was among the first generation of actors to receive formal training at the school, where she was equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to enter the professional arts career.
The year 1966 marked an important milestone in Nguyen Thuy Van's career. While still a second-year student at the university, director Huy Thanh trusted her with the female lead role - Ms. Van - in the movie "Noi Gio". The older sister named Van (People's Artist Thuy Van) joined the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam, the younger brother named Phuong (People's Artist The Anh) - a lieutenant of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam. After witnessing the suffering and loss of war, Phuong returned to stand on the same side with his sister, fightin.g for independence and peace.
In the film, Thuy Van plays a series of scenes where she is beaten and tortured by the enemy. During her lifetime, sharing in an interview, People's Artist Thuy Van said that although she had acted in many films and taken on the role of director, she still could not overcome the shadow of this role.
Recalling the scene of setting fire to her hands, she still shudders and is haunted. According to People's Artist Thuy Van, that scene was not rehearsed in advance, but "filmed in one take" at the request of the film crew. During filming, her 10 fingertips were wrapped in a layer of gauze, then covered with a layer of plaster, and the outermost layer of cotton soaked in oil, then set on fire.
"I still don't understand why I was so enthusiastic back then when I hadn't had any rehearsal. The film crew assigned someone to hold a large water bucket and stand next to me. When the director called cu.t, I immediately put my hand in it. If I were to re-act now, I probably wouldn't be able to do it," Thuy Van once shared.
Not only that, Thuy Van also had to go to Quy Cao Farm (Tien Lang district, Hai Phong) to learn the lifestyle of the Southerners who had gathered in the North, learn how to row a boat, walk on a monkey bridge...
